FREE ACCESS THIS WEEKEND
In honor of both Danish Constitution Day and Swedish National Day, MyHeritage is opening up every Danish and Swedish historical record — over 350 million in total — for free, from June 5–8, 2025. The Danish records include 31 collections with church books, censuses, newspapers, and more, covering vital events and everyday life since 1787; and the Swedish collections span from the 1600s onward, featuring household examination rolls, birth and death records, military lists, and more. Just last month, they added a collection of Swedish passenger lists documenting the names, birthplaces, residences, and destinations of Swedes who left the country between 1869 and 1951. Access the Danish collections here: https://www.myheritage.com/research/catalog?location=Denmark and the Swedish collections, here: https://www.myheritage.com/research/catalog?location=Sweden
NATIONAL ARCHIVES GENEALOGY SERIES
Well, oops — I missed posting the first few events in the 2025 National Archives Genealogy Series! It snuck right past me this year and I do apologize. Good news, though, is that they’re all recorded and available to watch for free on their YouTube channel, plus links to the PDF handouts are available for the programs on the program page at https://www.archives.gov/calendar/genealogy-series/2025
This year’s programs are: Revealing Ties to Espionage in the Office of Strategic Services Records , From the Territory of Montana to the Republic of Vietnam: Researching Native American Veterans in the National Archives, 1881–1966, Washington, DC, Law and Order: Cops and Robbers, 1861–1991, Disaster Preparedness and Response for Family Collections, and Researching Immigrant Ancestors: Alien Registration (AR-2) Forms. (The last two can still be watched live).
HELPFUL UPDATE TO FAMILYSEARCH CATALOG
The FamilySearch catalog has added one tiny icon that’s almost as exciting as just finding a resource has been digitized — It’s a small square with a star in the upper right corner, and it links to the FamilySearch.org/labs Full-text search page for that collection. Read more about it on the FamilySearch blog (scroll down to the subhead ‘Full-Text Transcripts in the Catalog’) – https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/full-text-search-experimental-ai
JUNETEENTH EVENTS
There are several free events with a genealogy aspect on our calendar this month celebrating Juneteenth, the holiday which commemorates the end of slavery in the US. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free. Here are just two of the many upcoming free programs:
FamilySearch is hosting a special program on June 16, “Juneteenth Special: Preserving US Colored Troops’ Stories,” with speakers Bernice Alexander Bennett, Donya Williams, Thom Reed, and Brian Sheffey. You can watch live on both Facebook and RootsTech.org. You can search the RootsTech site for “Juneteenth” for more recorded videos, too.
American Ancestors and the National Urban League are hosting a free online event on June 12, “10 Million Names: A Conversation About African American Family History and Healing,” with Marc Morial, President & CEO of the National Urban League, and well-known genealogist Kenyatta D. Berry, honoring the lives of 10 million enslaved people, and talking about the 10 Million Names project which is working to recover the names and tell the stories of enslaved people in pre-and post-colonial America from 1500 to 1865.
You can also search our calendars for “Juneteenth”, or look through the African American Research Calendar page here: https://conferencekeeper.org/africanamerican/
