FREE ACCESS TO US CITY DIRECTORIES, THROUGH SUNDAY

In honor of the US Independence Day, MyHeritage is offering free access to their US City Directories collection through Sunday, July 7. This database was created from 1.3 billion records in directories, dated 1860 to 1960. City Directories offer up some very valuable ancestral information, especially for the years surrounding 1890 (since the census records were destroyed). https://www.myheritage.com/research/collection-10705/us-city-directories

CASEFILE CLUES RETURNS

Michael John Neill (Genealogy Tip of the Day) is starting up Casefile Clues again. Casefile Clues is a 4-8 page PDF emailed to you twice a month, each with a different genealogy research problem/scenario. From an email I received, “Content will be practical, easy-to-read and follow, methodologically accurate, and down-to-earth. Our goals are to help you with your own research by providing content that models sound practice and writing without sounding pretentious or making untrue generalizations.” You can find a sample Casefile Clues here. For more info, see the blog post on the GTotD website here.

FYI: MINNESOTA ADOPTION RECORDS

“As of July 2024, adopted people born in Minnesota who are 18 or older can request and receive noncertified copies of their original birth records. If the adopted person is deceased, their legal representative or certain people related to the adopted person can request the records. Previously, adopted people’s access to their original birth record depended on the disclosure preferences of the birth parent(s).” Details on how to request are on the MN Department of Health website.
