NEW GENEALOGY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

If you’re passionate about genealogy and ready to dive into the dissertation level of the Master of Science (MSc) in Genealogical, Palaeographic, and Heraldic Studies at the University of Strathclyde, the new Borders and Shires Scholarship is an amazing opportunity! This scholarship is worth £2,812 and is designed to support genealogists, especially those with limited access to other financial aid, plus there’s a special preference for residents of the United States. To be eligible, you need to have completed the PG Diploma level of the MSc by September of the current year, and applications must be submitted by July 22, 2025. https://www.strath.ac.uk/studywithus/centreforlifelonglearning/news/bordersandshiresscholarship/

NEW YORK STORIES?

New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is seeking your stories of New York for this year’s 2025 New York State Family History Conference, “Echoes of New York.” If you are willing to have your story filmed and publicly shared, please submit a brief summary (250 words maximum) of your story by July 11, 2025, to development@nygbs.org with the subject line “NY Stories Submission.” Narrated stories should be between 4 and 8 minutes long. DA VINCI DNA

A new book was published this week, titled “Genìa Da Vinci. Genealogy and Genetics for Leonardo’s DNA” by Alessandro Vezzosi and Agnese Sabato, part of the Leonardo DNA Project. The book traces Leonardo da Vinci’s family tree back to 1331, over 21 generations and 400 individuals, identifying 15 male-line descendants of da Vinci’s family through his father and half-brother Domenico Benedetto, with six living men confirmed to carry Y chromosome segments from the da Vinci family line. The authors’ study aims to possibly discover insights into Da Vinci’s genius, creativity, health, and causes of death through genealogical and genetic research on da Vinci’s DNA. Another important aspect of the project is the possibility of recovering historical DNA from various sources, including tiny biological samples like fingerprints on pages — just imagine being able to recover DNA from your family heirlooms!

THE LATEST ON 23andME

If you’ve been following the 23andMe bankruptcy details, you may already be aware that Regeneron Pharmaceuticals was the top bid, at $256 million — a full $100 million more than the second highest bid placed by 23andMe’s founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki. The court has appointed an ombudsman to assess and report on the impact of the sale on 23andMe customer privacy by June 10. If you’d like more details, please see Roberta Estes’ well-written and clearly explained blog post at DNA Explainedwww.dna-explained.com .

OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

Due to rising expenses, energy costs, and inflation in general, the Ohio Genealogical Society will be raising their dues effective June 1. While at first glance it may seem like a significant bump – for example, individual membership changes from $40/yr to $60/yr — it’s still a bargain even at the new price for all of the benefits included – especially if you have Ohio ancestors, like I do (too many to count!). The new rate will apply to renewals and new memberships purchased on and after June 1, so consider joining or renewing by the end of this month. I always encourage folks to support societies, and membership is one of the best you can do that. Check out the Ohio Genealogical Society at their website: https://www.ogs.org/
