This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
NARA LOCATIONS CLOSING
Just this week, news is out that National Archives (NARA) will be closing the Chicago, San Francisco (San Bruno) and Seattle facilities in the next couple of years. Reasons being cited are “reducing real estate portfolio” and another article mentioned a transition to electronic recordkeeping. Many of the records will be moved to Kansas City or put online. Make sure to double-check where your ancestors’ paperwork is hiding before you plan your next big NARA trip. More at https://federalnewsnetwork.com/facilities-construction/2026/06/national-archives-to-transition-out-of-three-federal-records-centers/
BOOK GIVEAWAY
Ancestral Findings is giving away a copy of the book Tracing Your Ancestors Using What They Left Behind: A Guide for Family Historians by Simon Wills. You can read a brief review of the book (it sounds wonderful), and enter to win before July 4. See our CONTESTS page for this and other contests and giveaways. https://conferencekeeper.org/genealogy-contests/
DID YOUR ANCESTORS BUILD THE MISSIONS?
A wonderful new project called “Find Your Roots, Claim Your Story“ is helping families discover if their ancestors actually built the historic San Antonio Missions in Texas. By filling out a simple 17-question survey, genealogy researchers can team up with local university experts to trace their family trees back generations. It’s an amazing opportunity for people to find their own roots and reclaim their family’s rightful place in America’s past. https://www.facebook.com/groups/sanantoniomissionindiandescendantsgroup/
FREEDMEN’S BUREAU JUNETEENTH MILESTONE
To mark Juneteenth and the 10th anniversary of the Freedmen’s Bureau Project, FamilySearch highlighted a major breakthrough involving the “Kingstree 435”. A researcher uncovered a rare transportation document identifying 435 freed individuals who traveled from South Carolina to Texas after the Civil War. The free FamilySearch/RootsTech webinar “Found Together: The Kingstree 435 Story” is still free to watch at https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/found-together-the-kingstree-435-story
HOW ARE YOU CELEBRATING?
FamilySearch has several America250 resources to help folks explore family connections to the nation’s 250th anniversary with free records, a shared Family Tree, and story-preservation tools. Their ‘toolbox’ includes a 250 Challenge; opportunities to add names, photos, and memories; and ways to nominate meaningful family stories for possible preservation through the “Our American Story” project. Local FamilySearch centers and affiliate libraries may also offer free assistance for researching ancestors, preserving family memories, and connecting family history to broader American history. Find the FamilySearch America 250 tools at https://www.familysearch.org/en/campaign/page/america250
The National Genealogical Society also has resources and ideas for both societies and individuals for celebrating the upcoming sesquicentennial. It’s free for everyone – https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/america250/
BEST WEBSITES OF 2026
The National Genealogical Society‘s website has been named one of the 101 Best Genealogy Websites of 2026 by Family Tree Magazine (US), in the Best Genealogy News and Advice category. It really is a great resource (especially their calendar 🙂 ). Much of the website is free for everyone, but a few pages are reserved for active NGS members.
ACCESS ENDING SOON
If you registered for the 2026 NGS Family History Conference, please note that access to the recordings is available in the Whova app through July 15.
