MOBILE GENEALOGY: LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA

You’ll notice several instances of two different programs from The Library of Virginia, on the list of What’s New this week. The first is their online volunteer transcription project webinars, where you have the opportunity to help transcribe documents from their collections. What makes these events different than others is that they offer training during the sessions and have folks available to assist and answer questions while you’re participating.

The second series is their LVA on the Go. These programs are in-person only, held at various public libraries around the state of Virginia. The LVA has a specially equipped vehicle loaded with local and family history materials, along with trained staff offering assistance — even with genealogy research.

FREE WEBINAR COLLECTIONS ON AFRICAN AMERICAN GENEALOGY

Here’s something I just learned about that is available from Legacy Family Tree Webinars: “Legacy Family Tree Webinars, in conjunction with the Reuters series Slavery’s Descendants, is making available at no charge a variety of about 15 online recorded genealogy webinars per month from its extensive library, with the offerings changing each month through the end of 2023. These webinars require no registration and are accessible without membership to anyone, at any time during the month. The webinars range from introductions to genealogy for novices to courses that explore African American genealogy. See the full details here: https://familytreewebinars.com/reuters/

ANOTHER EXCELLENT AD-FREE GENEALOGY NEWSLETTER

I know we all get way too much email, but one monthly email I always read in its entirety is The Clayton Crier, the email newsletter of the Houston Public Library Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library Campus. They are always so informative, and are only about genealogical research (no ads!)! Each monthly newsletter is comprised of about three in-depth articles on genealogical research subjects, which include sources, citations, and a bibliography for further study. For example, the July issue’s articles are “Tracing Your Ancestors Who Signed the Declaration of Independence,” by Rebecca Grimes; “Genograms: Mapping Family Patterns,” by Steven Bychowski; and “Researching Your Prisoner of War Ancestors,” by Rodney Sam.  You can find past issues at https://houstonlibrary.org/genealogy (scroll down the page a bit and you’ll see the heading “Past Newsletters & Programs”). The Houston Public Library offers three research center newsletters: HRC African American History Research Center at the Gregory School, HRC Family History Research Center at Clayton Library, and HRC Houston History Research Center. From the following link, you can sign up for any or all of these excellent resources: https://pxl.to/HPLCrier

 . . . . . .

That’s it for this week 🙂 Thank you as always for your support, comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. I read and reply to every message! If you don’t see a reply in a few days, check your SPAM folder (I’ve found my emails often end up there, unfortunately!)   You may either use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you’d like to reach me.  Have a great week!

– Tami Osmer Mize
