> BIG NEWS!

If you attended the National Genealogical Society’s Family History Conference these past few days, you might already have heard the big news – I am so absolutely thrilled to be able to share with you that Genealogy ConferenceKeeper.org, Inc., is merging with the National Genealogical Society! This will greatly expand our audience, and not only expose more genealogy researchers to our free online calendar of events but will also encourage hundreds more societies and libraries to add their events for free promotion. As you know by now, I am the sole operator at ConferenceKeeper.org, and the support of the National Genealogical Society will also be a huge benefit, as they will manage the “business” end of the non-profit, leaving me free to focus on what I really love doing: maintaining the calendar, website, and social media accounts, answering your emails, and sharing genealogy news and updates in this weekly email.  I am so grateful for their support, and I am always grateful for the support and feedback from each of you.

One other BIG announcement at the conference this week is that the National Genealogical Society has also acquired the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP).  NGS is truly dedicated to excellence in genealogy education!

> THIS WEEK’S OTHER NEWS & EVENTS:

ZOOM VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

Speaking of excellent genealogy education, the folks at the Institute for Historical and Genealogical Research (IGHR) are looking for volunteers to help facilitate 30 minute sessions for the FamilySearch Family History and Genealogy Virtual Expo 2023 on Saturday, June 24.  Facilitators can be remote,  but must be on a laptop or a desktop computer. Training is available if you’d like, and an evening between June 19-21 will be scheduled.  Find out all about the Expo  at https://ighr.gagensociety.org/familysearch-expo/.  The deadline for registering as a Facilitator is June 16.  On the Volunteer SignUp sheet, you can sign up for multiple sessions, but just one session per time slot. The signup sheet, with instructions, is at volunteersignup.org/XLCEM

CONTEST UPDATE

The enter-by date for the Vivid-Pix giveaway has been corrected on the calendar – Enter by June 30 to win one of the three great prizes: 1st Prize – Memory Station Education Software Bundle, 2nd Prize – Education 4 Course Pro Bundle, 3rd Prize – Vivid-Pix RESTORE Software. The drawing will be held July 10, 2023.  https://www.vivid-pix.com/photomonthgiveaway23

SAVING YOUR OLD DIGITAL PHOTOS & MORE

Anyone who has been taking digital photos for a while (and that means most of you readers, probably!) really should attend this free upcoming webinar from Backlog Archivists & Historians on June 25 at 7 pm CT, titled  Preserving Early Digital Photographs — Strategies for Organizing, Converting, and Storing Your Memories from the Digital Camera Era, which is described: “Early digital photographs are at risk of being lost due to outdated file formats and hardware. This webinar will teach you how to convert early digital photos to modern formats and store them safely.”

On July 23, they’re hosting another important-for-everyone webinar, “Digital Inheritance: Understanding What Happens to Your Online Accounts After Death”  Details and registration links for both (and others) at https://www.backlog-archivists.com/webinars

JUNETEENTH WEBINARS FROM FAMILYSEARCH

FamilySearch has an excellent lineup of LIVE and INTERACTIVE webinars on African-American research and history scheduled for June 19 in honor of Juneteenth. They’re all on the ConferenceKeeper.org calendar, but details can also be found at https://www.familysearch.org/en/newsroom/familysearch-6-new-juneteenth-classes

MORE GENEALOGY COURSES, CERTIFICATES & CERTIFICATIONS

I’ve added two new programs to the ConferenceKeeper Education page.  You can now become Accredited in Investigative Genetic Genealogy, by the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Accreditation Board (IGGAB).  Ramapo College of New Jersey offers an IGG Certificate Program online.

The International Institute of Genealogical Studies has LOTS of courses starting up this summer – Many on Monday, June 5. Honestly, there are just too many different topics and courses to even list on the calendar. You can find the IIGS information listed on the “Degree & Certificate Programs” page on ConferenceKeeper.org, and you can find the calendar of their upcoming courses on their website here: https://genealogicalstudies.com/

And just for those with a California mailing address, Santa Rosa Junior College (CA) has six different free non-credit genealogy courses starting mid-August and run through mid-December. (All are sections of Genealogy OA505) Topics include migration, immigration, DNA, database tools, Eastern European ancestors and two sections of Genealogy for Beginners. The courses are designed for older learners and are free, but require a California mailing address to register. Full details are in each listing on our calendar, and enrollment information is at https://older-adults.santarosa.edu/join-class

I think that’s it for this week’s news. I love to hear your thoughts and comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. They help me keep the calendar as up to date as possible, and also help me know what may need improvement.   Don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you’d like to reach me.  Have a great week!
