This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)
GENEALOGISTS NEEDED
Genealogists aged 55+ are being sought to participate in a new research project, titled “The Family Genealogists and Long-Lost Relatives Study.” In this study, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC), researchers want to learn more about the experiences of diverse midlife to older aged adults (aged 55+) who have searched for, and located a previously unknown immediate or closely related genetic relative. Read more about the study, and see if you fit their profile for participation by answering three questions. If so, participation involves a web-based survey that should take less than a half hour to complete. https://www.sfu.ca/gerontology/research/agegen2.html
IDENTIFYING FALLEN HEROES FROM WWII & KOREA
GEDmatch recently launched a new initiative called “Fallen Warriors: The Unknowns” aimed at using genetic genealogy to identify unnamed military personnel who perished in service. This program seeks to match DNA from unidentified remains with living relatives, in efforts to restore names and stories to these forgotten heroes. Of course, success relies on GEDmatch users opting to include their DNA data in research comparisons. Read more about it here: https://www.gedmatch.com/fallen-warriors-the-unknowns/
KENTUCKY KIN?
The Kentucky Genealogical Society has digitized over 47 years of their print newsletter/quarterly journal, Bluegrass Roots, and put it all online for free! The publications are individually searchable PDFs, and packed full of names, dates, and Kentucky state and local history. If you have Kentucky or area ancestors, you’ll want to check out this resource – https://kygs.omeka.net/collections/show/4
A MAP, A SALE, AND A REQUEST
Three bits of news for you from Vivid-Pix this week:
1. They’re putting together a map of locations where interested folks can find and use the Memory Station products and software. Often these are purchased by individuals and organizations and then donated to a shared use site, like a library or senior center. If your organization would like to be included in the locator map, please fill out their form here.
2. If you don’t yet have the Memory Station Software (Home) or Memory Station Professional Software, they’re offering 50% off through August 31, 2025, and
3. They’re working on a major update and are looking for software testers. If you’re interested, email support@vivid-pix.com.
