This Week’s Genealogy News:

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)

SWEDISH ROOTS CASTING CALL

If you’re an American with Swedish roots, you’re invited to apply to be part of the show Allt För Sverige “The Great Swedish Adventure.” They’re looking for “outgoing and adventurous Americans with Swedish ancestry — even the smallest connection counts — who have never visited Sweden and who are eager to discover their roots and experience their ancestral homeland.” Filming will take place in Sweden in spring 2026, travel and accommodation are provided. Apply by November 30th. Good luck! Details are here.

KOREAN WAR ERA DRAFT CARDS

Fold3 has added newly digitized Korean War Era Draft Registration Cards from 10 US states: Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington. The blog post here has the link to search the collection for free (but viewing the cards requires a subscription).

IGGAB SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

From a recent IGGAB post on social media: The Investigative Genetic Genealogy Association is inviting individuals to join them in shaping the future of investigative genetic genealogy through a collaborative community. IGGA’s mission seeks to foster education, community, and professional standards by bringing together practicing genetic genealogists, aspiring practitioners, and professionals in related fields to emphasize the shared foundations of our work. They are currently seeking volunteers for the following roles: Program Development Lead, and Steering Committee Members. For full details on the position responsibilities and expectations, as well as how to apply, visit: www.igg-assoc.org. The window for applications closes December 1, 2025.

BIRLS APPEALS

Reclaim the Records has updated their BIRLS website with new suggestions for those who may have submitted Veterans C-File/SC-File requests and received the disappointing one-page genealogy letter (providing basically the same info that you submitted in the first place). Appeals must be made within 90 days of receiving the VA’s response letter, and RtR’s Appeals page includes four new sample letters you may use with your appeal request. https://www.birls.org/appeals

CONSIDER WAITING 68 DAYS

I mentioned here last week about the new process that MyHeritage has adopted of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), and that while you can’t have previously submitted samples re-tested, you may submit a new test for this new process. HOWEVER, after reading Roberta Estes’ blog post on DNAeXplained, I felt I should share important information she mentions: While ALL MyHeritage tests sold at this point on will be WGS tests, “MyHeritage has clarified that only kits arriving in the lab in January 2026 are guaranteed to run on the WGS machine. So if you order now at the sale price, wait to mail it back until January.” So go ahead and purchase new kits, but hold off on sending it in until January. Kits are on sale at least thru this weekend for $33 with free shipping. You can help your favorite blogger by ordering from a link on their site, or (since we don’t participate in affiliate marketing) directly from MyHeritage, here: https://www.myheritage.com/dna (And don’t forget to enter the Reunions Magazine giveaway to WIN a MyHeritage DNA kit! See the Deadlines section below).

PAYPAL PROFFERS PERPLEXITY PRO

If you have a PayPal and/or Venmo account and have not yet signed up for either a paid subscription or free trial of the artificial intelligence program Perplexity Pro, you may be eligible for a free one-year Perplexity Pro subscription, which also may include early access to Perplexity’s Comet AI browser. Details about the PayPal offer here and claim it here. For Venmo, both are here. The 12-month free account converts to a paid account at the end of the term unless cancelled.

NEW NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

A NEW MEMBERCONNECTS: NGS members are invited to attend a special Zoom program with Bennett Greenspan, the founder of FamilyTree DNA, looking back on 25 years of commercial DNA testing. The program will be 5 November at 8 pm Eastern. NGS members were emailed an invitation Friday (yesterday) which included the registration link. If you didn’t see the email, members may email Kate Smith, NGS Associate Director for Organizations and Communications to request one.

NEW GENTECH TOOLBOX: Cyndi Ingle (of Cyndi’s List) will be the Toolmaster for the November 19 workshop, “Organizing Your Data, Files, and Research Life.” Space is limited for the live workshop, with recordings also available for purchase. Details for upcoming and past programs, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox
