ALL of the upcoming genealogy events.

. . . . . .

I hope y’all have had a lovely week, and if you’re in the US, enjoyed some tasty meals and the company of family and/or friends over the holiday.  The winner for this past week’s DNA test kit giveaway was randomly selected by an automated program just a few minutes ago, and has been notified by email (If your name begins with “Carr..” you might want to check your email again).

This week I have a few tidbits of genealogy information for you, and no mention of Black Friday sales at all. There’s enough of that available online and in your email, I’m sure 🙂

NEW STUDY GROUP

From Cari Taplin (GenealogyPants): “We have opened registration for the 2023 NGSQ Study Groups. This is a monthly study group that will examine one National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ) journal article per month as posted on the website NGSQ Study Groups. We will study these articles with a focus on principles taught in Mastering Genealogical Proof (MGP) by Tom Jones. We will discuss topics on the genealogy standards, evidence analysis and correlation, writing, citations, and more. The cost is $75 for the year.” Full information can be found at: https://genealogypants.com/…/classes…/ngsq-study-groups/

NYG&B 2023 PROGRAMS

Fans of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society won’t want to miss the Dec. 12 webinar announcing their 2023 programs. “Those attending the announcement will have the first opportunity to sign-up for our popular research tours, online programs, and new offerings from the New York Family History School.” https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/events/2023-programs-announcement

MASTODON UPDATE

I’m enjoying meeting genealogists from around the world on Mastodon, and have moved my ConferenceKeeper account to the genealogy-centric server, Genealysis.social.  Find me there @ConferenceKeeper@genealysis.social

DEAR SANTA…

The following paragraphs are a lot to read, I know, so here is the synopsis (aka TL;DR – too long, didn’t read)
1). Consider giving (or asking for) genealogy education as a gift
2). Any mention I make of products or people is my own opinion and not any kind of sales or marketing.

With the holidays looming, I’m sure that enough folks are trying to sell you website subscriptions or DNA kits – usually affiliate programs that pays them for every sale. If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ll know that I don’t do that. Anything I talk about in my email is because I think it’s going to be helpful information for you. If I talk about a product  or program, it’s something I use and find to be pretty dang helpful and awesome. (OK, the exception to this is Airtable — I do get credit for ConferenceKeeper’s account if you sign up for a free account with them, but I rely heavily on the program and would tout it’s greatness no matter). True, there is paid advertising down the sidebars on the website and also  on the “Thank You Advertisers” page, but the advertising stops there. (By the way, there are some great holiday gift ideas in those ads!)

Back to the Christmas/holidays thing. Here’s my thought – whether you’re gifting TO a genealogist, or making your own wish list, why not go with genealogy education? In addition to webinars and meetings, there are many excellent courses, seminars and conferences listed on ConferenceKeeper at any given time, costing anywhere from free to $5 and on up.  Maybe you (or your gift recipient) have received a DNA test kit but are not sure what to do next. You can find lots of “how to” courses in DNA from beginning to advanced levels, from experts like The DNA Geek and Your DNA Guide, to name a couple off the top of my head. You can find multi-session courses on all kinds of genealogy research topics on our calendar or on our “Education” page. National Genealogical Society, Pharos Tutoring , Family History Academy, and National Institute for Genealogical Studies are just a few sites offering high-quality,  multi-session academic courses online, and many of their upcoming courses are already on our calendar. (Again, mentioning these folks off the top of my head – there are lots!)

Looking for a truly stand-out gift? How about registration to one of the major genealogy institutes for 2023, like the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG),  Genealogy Research Institute of Pittsburg (GRIP); The Midwest African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI), Texas Institute of Genealogical Research (TIGR), Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR); and the Applied Genealogy Institute. Most of these are already on our calendar too.

How about a conference pass? A RootsTech in-person ticket is only $98.  Other choices might be any of the state-level genealogical society conferences, or the Spring and Fall seminars from so many of the state and local societies, always featuring excellent speakers. I’ve been trying my best to get as many of these events for 2023 on the calendar so you can plan well in advance (or put these on your Christmas wish list!).

If you know of any that are not yet on the calendar, please let me know!

As always, thank you for reading and following ConferenceKeeper.org 🙂 Please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org. if you have any comments or questions. I sincerely appreciate your input!

– Tami Osmer Mize
