This week’s email is being sponsored by the Texas State Genealogical Society

This virtual event begins with TxSGS Live!, which showcases 10 speakers on November 1-2, and includes more than 30 additional on-demand and bonus sessions available through February 2, 2025.

This Week’s Genealogy News:
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Sept 15 to Oct 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month! NGS members received an email this past week with several resources for researching Hispanic/Latino ancestors. I’m including just a couple of those here:
- Hispanic Family History Resources page on the FamilySearch Wiki
- Mission 2000: Spanish Mission Records by the National Park Service
- Mexican Genealogy Resources by Moises Garza
- Great New Mexico Pedigree Database from the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico
FREE FAMILY HISTORY STORYTELLING COURSE
Last week I mentioned the free live training course, “The Keeper’s Journey,” from EvalogueLife. Even if you missed the first session, you can still sign up to attend the remaining two live sessions here. The live sessions include a very helpful Q&A, but for those who are busy (or shy), the replays and other materials are available to view for free on the event page at https://evalogue.life/keeper until Monday, Sept. 30. It’s completely free, and no signup is required!
ZOTERO 7 BOOK
If you use Zotero, the free research organizing program (a description which barely covers all it does), you might already know that the upgrade to Zotero 7 included some rather big changes. Author and genealogist Donna Cox Baker, who wrote the book that introduced most of us to the program, Zotero For Genealogy, has since written a completely separate book to cover the new version. You can purchase A Quick Guide to Zotero 7 directly from the author at her website www.genohistory.com, or on Amazon.
VOLUNTEER PAGE UPDATE
I revamped the Volunteer Opportunities page on the website this week, changing it from clickable image tiles to a table that includes an image, title with link, and a brief description of the projects. My goal was to make it easier to find volunteer projects based on their type and content. I’m wondering whether I should do the same for the Podcasts and YouTube pages now! I’d love to hear your thoughts — You can email me at tami@conferencekeeper.org, or use the CONTACT button on the website.
NEW BOOK FOR NEW YORK RESEARCH
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has a new book coming out: New York State Archives Guide: For Family Historians, Biographers, and Historical Researchers, which boasts “more than 500 pages of carefully curated information for researchers.” They’ve got a free webinar coming up on October 8 (2 pm Eastern), where they will discuss what the book covers, give insights as to how it can help you in your research, and answer questions. The webinar is free, but you must register here.
PROGRAM SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONS
Genealogical societies and libraries are invited to host an event this fall or spring, for members and/or their community, with Vivid-Pix on their upcoming winter/spring US tour. Vivid-Pix will provide all the hardware, software, promotional material and education FOR FREE. Your group just provides the date and the venue. Details at https://www.vivid-pix.com/events/
NGS member societies have the benefit of being able to request the whole Memory Station setup to borrow for free at any time of the year (the only expense is the cost of returning the equipment). The Family Matters program provides scanner, software, education, and handouts for organizations to host their own events, whether for their members’ benefit or for a larger community outreach!
DR. QUINN, GENEALOGY DETECTIVE?
The subscription service Acorn TV recently announced on their Facebook page a new show starring Jane Seymour titled Relative Secrets. The series will mix true-crime and genealogy, delving into participants’ family histories, and discovering “the dark truths buried in their bloodlines.”
