COMPUTER UPDATE

I’m still hobbling along on a very old computer this week, while my laptop awaits a new motherboard; at nearly half the price of the computer new, it’s definitely worth repairing vs. replacing (although it was a very expensive computer to start with, so I’m sweating that repair bill for sure!! Thank you so much to those who have helped out thus far.  I’m about 1/3 of the way to covering the expense – there’s a PayPal button toward the bottom of this page if you’d like to help out, or email info@conferencekeeper.org if you might like to put up a sidebar ad soon ($45/month).  I’m truly hoping next week’s email will be on my faithful (and fast, and powerful) laptop again!

DATES WORTH REPEATING (ERRORS WORTH CORRECTING)

Registration opens THIS Wednesday, February 22 for this year’s Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP).  (Last week’s email mistakenly listed Feb. 23). Registration for the week of virtual classes in June begins at 12 noon Eastern time, and registration for the in-person week of classes in July begins at 2:00 pm Eastern. Check out the website well ahead of time to know which course you want to take, and how to be prepared for registration when it opens. https://www.gripitt.org/registration/

NOT FUN, BUT IMPORTANT…

As the family genealogist, when the unfortunate time comes that someone you know needs an obituary written, chances are good that you’ll be the one asked to write it.  Where do you even begin? The Heritage Seekers Genealogy Club has a free webinar scheduled June 26 called How to Write an Obituary, with Deb Moore, Central Arkansas Library System.  See their website for info on how to register.  https://heritageseekersar.com/

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

This week five new volunteer opportunities have been added to the Volunteer page:

ULSTER HISTORICAL FOUNDATION’S 2023 US TOUR

It’s that time of year again, when folks from the Ulster Historical Foundation make a tour of the United States, teaching Irish Genealogy workshops from coast to coast. I think I’ve added all of their currently posted dates to the calendar.  You can search the calendars for “Ulster” or “Ireland” for programs, or you can go directly to their website at North America Lecture Tour, 9-25 March 2023 – Ulster Historical Foundation (ancestryireland.com to see when and where they may be near your, or Virtually.

SUBMISSION FORM CHANGES

Not being completely computer-crippled, I was still able to make a few Submission form revisions (and related automation coding) that have been on my to-do list for way too long.

The first change is that instead of choosing Virtual or Hybrid, the choices are now Virtual and/or In-Person. If both are chosen, the event will automatically show up as Hybrid.

Another change is the ability to add Tags to submissions, which will greatly improve searching the calendar by topic. I realized in searching for some things myself, that not all program titles necessarily explain what the content of the program includes.   My goal is to make the process of both submitting events as well as the back end of getting them on the calendar as efficient as possible and I’m feeling pretty good about it for now… But I would like comments and suggestions if you have any about these changes (or anything else!).

As always, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions.  Have a great week!

– Tami Osmer Mize
