I’ve got a LOT of ideas and info for you this week — I hope you find them useful!

FIND YOUR PEOPLE

A passage from Diahan Southard’s “Monday Minute” email this past week really resonated with something I’ve been thinking about for a while now.  Diahan wrote:

Just because we are older doesn’t mean it is any less important for us to find and connect with a group of people who share our interests and passions.  It can be difficult and scary, and it is so much easier to just stay home, alone… . But the connection is worth the effort. So today I am challenging you to just get out there! Connect with a group of people who share your interests. Lend them your passion. Be brave.

Every week, new, informal genealogy discussion programs are added to our calendar from all over – Unlike more structured society meetings, these in particular are simple, informal and casual Zoom meetings for general genealogy discussion.  Many are hosted by public libraries or societies, and most all are open to the public and free.  Why not look through the calendar for one of these general discussion groups (I try to tag them with the keywords general discussion and several new groups have been added this week). Or maybe try a Special Interest Group on a topic that interests you.  Be willing, as Diahan wrote, to lend them your passion.  Who knows, you might learn from others in the group, and they might learn from you as well.

YOUTUBE & PODCAST ADDITION

Another new YouTube channel and podcast have been added to the corresponding pages: Know Your Ancestors with Megan Hillyer.

MY MORE THAN 15 SECONDS OF FAME…

The Extreme Genes podcast this week contained the short segment that Scott Fisher recorded with me talking about ConferenceKeeper (Episode #457) . It could take an hour or more to mention every aspect of the website, but I’m happy I was able to hopefully introduce some new folks to what ConferenceKeeper offers in my few minutes on air.

Preceding my segment was one with a gentleman who was promoting a really wonderful program called The Stories Behind the Stars project  — a national effort of volunteers to write stories for each of the 421,000 individuals who were killed while serving in the US military during WWII.  I noticed that the West Valley Genealogical Society in Arizona is having an in-person presentation on this very subject for their May meeting — I hope other societies look into it as well. It’s really a wonderful project.

…WHICH LED TO SOME WEBSITE UPDATES…

After listening to “my” portion of the podcast, I realized it had been a while since I checked the society links on each state page that I mentioned on the show. So I spent the next day and a half checking the 1,340 genealogy society links, and hopefully they’re all working now.  I am fairly confident that the ConferenceKeeper list is the most complete listing of US genealogical societies currently available online. There are probably still more societies that are only on Facebook that I haven’t discovered yet, but I will be searching again soon – and hopefully adding lists for Canadian provinces as well.  If you know of a society that isn’t listed, please let me know! You can find a state’s page by going to the Locations tab, or just typing in www.ConferenceKeeper.org/state_name   (i.e., www.ConferenceKeeper.org/Arizona)

AWESOME STUFF FOR GENEALOGISTS

Spring is in full swing in many parts of the US, which means a few gift-giving holidays are sneaking up on us as well. Mother’s Day in the US is coming up on May 14, and Father’s Day is June 18. And in the midst of those two tend to be a few graduations and commencements as well. If you’re looking for gifts to both inspire and share your own love of family history, consider checking what our website advertisers have to offer. We are not affiliates and do not make any kind of commission from any program or product that we recommend; Our website advertisers do pay a small monthly fee which helps cover the website’s expenses.

That being said, there’s really something for everyone among our current advertisers. Want to give a gift of education? How about a hybrid conference with Judy Russell from the St. Louis Genealogical Society, a full 18-module course on Family History from the National Genealogical Society, a week-long research institute course at GRIP on Advanced Family History Research of US Ancestors 1917-1930, a free toolkit for writing a life story or one of the many great courses from Evalogue Life, and if you’ve already gifted a DNA kit, how about the YDNA for Genealogy course from Your DNA Guide (Diahan Southard)?

Does Mom like to read? I recently finished “Listening to the Voices of Our Ancestors” by Megan Reilly Koepsell. I really enjoyed all of the wonderful stories of genealogy “synchronicity” and hope to experience a few now in my own research. Megan’s books “My (Grandma/Grammie/Grandpa) is a Genealogist” are a wonderful way for parents and grandparents to help give a love of family history to children.

If you’re looking for a hard-to-find genealogy book, or for recommendations for the best book to help with a particular genealogy research problem, call or email the folks at MyGenealogyBooks.com (Books and Things), who will be able to suggest the perfect genealogy book, which they probably also have in their massive inventory. Maybe you want to compile your own family history for a truly memorable gift – See how Akin can help you compile, design and produce your own beautiful heirloom books.

I’ve got two more to mention, but by all mean last does not mean least! Our newest advertiser has a wonderful program that would benefit any genealogy researcher. Animap provides a “rich and interactive historical research program allowing you to better target where to search for historical and ancestral records.” And finally, if you think you know Vivid-Pix, look again! Not only do they have the wonderful Restore photo correction software that helps bring your old photos back to life, but they also offer many more  products, programs and services that will help you preserve all of your photos AND memories. Check out ALL they offer, and I’m certain you’ll be truly impressed — they really have some perfect gift ideas for parents or grandparents who may be getting up there in years!

You’ll find all of these advertisers, with links to their websites, on the sides of most pages on ConferenceKeeper.org, or you can find them all in one place on our Thank You Advertisers page.

Thanks so much for reading all this today! You’ll find the list of newly added events, below. As always, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions. I always have access to my email 🙂  I hope y’all have a great week!
