A THANK YOU, A HAT TIP, & ANOTHER TV SHOW

A big thanks to EasyGenie.org for including ConferenceKeeper.org in their email last week. EasyGenie sells various genealogy charts, forms, and archival products on their website, and their blog and newsletter are always full of great information, and definitely worth subscribing too also.

Along with my ‘thank you’ goes a ‘hat tip’ to the  EasyGenie.org blog for the recent article about yet another great genealogy TV show – Legacy List with Matt Paxton. I know I’m gonna have to binge on these soon: Legacy List is kind of a cross between Hoarders (which Matt previously hosted) and Genealogy Road Show.  In Legacy List, Matt helps people downsize and declutter, and highlights the amazing family history treasures they find in the process. “With every item featured, Matt brings to life a family’s treasured past and delivers them to an uplifting future.”  I was really fortunate to meet Matt Paxton at RootsTech where he was quietly and unassumingly helping out at the Artifcts booth – kind of a surprise celebrity in the midst! I was impressed with his sincerity as he talked about his passion for helping people deal with their “stuff.” He is a super nice guy and truly lovely human being.

SLIG FALL VIRTUAL 2023

The courses have been posted for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) Fall Virtual 2023.  You can review the seven course options and their instructors on the UGA/SLIG website,  and mark your calendar for the registration opening on May 20 at 12:00 pm MDT

NEW IN-PERSON INSTITUTE IN MN

The Minnesota Genealogical Society is offering a new two-day, in-person Institute, entitled, “Midwest Genealogy Foundations: Migrations To and Through the Midwest.” It will be held this year on August 18-19. “A first of its kind, the two-day course will offer 10 hours of classroom instruction for intermediate and more advanced family history researchers. Class size is limited to 35 students to enhance opportunities for discussion and hands-on-exercises.” It will be held at the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Mendota Heights.

GENEALOGY AS A CAREER?

On April 22, The Hidden Branch blog is hosting a very unique webinar called “Careers Day”  with four very top-notch genealogists discussing how they each got into their respective genealogy professions, and pointers for people who want to work in the field of genealogy. The signup displays a start time of 3pm Dublin time which (according to https://www.timeanddate.com) is 7 am Pacific / 8 am Mountain / 9am Central / 10 am Eastern. Register at https://thehiddenbranch.com/events/the-hidden-branch-careers-day

DNA DAY 2023

Once again, DNA Day is April 25th.   You can find several special DNA programs on our calendars, including a full day of free webinars from FamilySearch.  (Did you know there is a calendar on our website devoted to DNA programs?  It’s listed under the “CALENDAR” tab at the top of each page!)

DNA Day also tends to have various sales and DNA-related contests too. I saw in a recent email that Your DNA Guide is offering some big discounts on their courses and has a really fabulous contest going as well, with a whole lot of great prizes – the details and link are on our Contest page.  I’m fairly certain that many other DNA educators and DNA kit companies will be offering some pretty good discounts too, so keep your eye out on social media, where they’re often advertised!

CAUGHT MY EYE

Adding to the 130+ new genealogy events on the calendar this week are the May webinars for the Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library. While their programs are always informative, three in particular really caught my eye. The first is on May 2 “HistoryForge: Mapping Your Family History.” (From the HistoryForge website, “HistoryForge is an open-source platform that integrates the historic demographic data in census records, maps, and other sources, allowing for its visual representation on historic maps layered over a Google Map. The result is a powerful tool for any community in the United States to explore its past.”)  My wheels automatically started turning in the direction of how this could make a great project for a local society or one-place study project.

The second is on May 11, “Mysterious Codes: Passenger Manifests Letters and Numbers,” with Christine Cohen. I always enjoy learning the meaning of all the additional markings on records like this.

While, again, all of their programs are good, this one on May 23 also caught my eye, if not just by the title alone “In Search of the Blonde Tigress: Finding Missing Persons.”  The course description sounds like it could have come from a Raymond Chandler novel!

MORE WEBSITE UPDATES

I’m always trying to make using the ConferenceKeeper website as user friendly as possible, and, though time zones are truly my nemesis, I made a slight adjustment to the virtual program time zone listings this week, adding the time zone for most of Arizona (which does not change from Mountain Standard Time). And it just so happens I’m heading to Arizona for a couple weeks to stay with my dad and celebrate his 99th birthday.

That’s all I’ve got for this week, except for the list of newly added events, below. As always, please don’t hesitate to use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions. I always have access to my email 🙂  I hope y’all have a great week!
