NEW SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCED
The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) has announced the creation of The Kenyatta D. Berry African American Research Scholarship, which recognizes an aspiring professional with a significant interest in developing a career in African American genealogy. The scholarship is open to both APG members and non-members. You can find this and other scholarship opportunities on our Awards, Grants & Scholarships page, too!
SC WORKSHOP IS HYBRID
The 2023 South Carolina Genealogical Society 50th Annual Summer Workshop, July 7-8, originally listed as in-person only (Columbia, SC), is going to be a Hybrid event, with several virtual presentations available. Diana Elder is the featured speaker, with presentations also by Cheri Hudson Passey, Katherine Bolt Borges, Brent Holcomb, Robert S. Davis, Mags Gaulden, and more. You can see the Virtual only schedule at https://www.scgen.org/workshop/virtual-schedule/ and full details about the entire event at https://www.scgen.org/workshop/
NEWBERRY SUMMER CLASSES
The Newberry Library has some interesting genealogy-related courses coming up this summer, some in-person and some online. Their 2023 Institute in Spanish Paleography runs July 10-21 and will be held in-person at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Participants will “learn to read and transcribe 15th -18th-century documents from Spain and the Americas.” Reading proficiency in Spanish is required. Their calendar of events is at https://www.newberry.org/calendar
MILITARY PENSION FILES EXPLAINED
Added this week is the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library free virtual program on August 9 titled “Anatomy of a U.S. Military Pension File: Revolutionary War through the Civil War.” This sounds like a great way to learn what you might find in a military pension file, as well as where to find and how to access them. Space is limited so register in advance. https://buffalolib.libcal.com/event/10764885
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE DOWNRIGHT SCARY
Lisa Louise Cooke’s recent Genealogy Gems video about using Artificial Intelligence (AI) “Chatbots” (like ChatGPT) to assist with your genealogy research includes some seriously scary results. It’s something that all genealogists need to be aware of, whether you’re thinking of using AI or not – because others might, which ultimately may affect our own research. You can either watch her video or read the transcript (I’m a reader, myself) at https://lisalouisecooke.com/2023/06/22/ai-chatbots-genealogy/
That being said, I do use AI to help with my research, but not to do my research for me – I will pose questions such as “Where all can I find school records before 1850 in Ashtabula County, Ohio.” I use a site called Perplexity.ai which is free (as most are). I really like that it will provide citations and sources of the information it provides, and also has an option for “Follow-up” questions which continue the entire thread of information (you know how research tends to be a rabbit hole!).
Whether you use it or not, you need to understand what AI is, can do, and how others may be using it as well, as it could affect your own future research. I’ve noticed at least one new webinar or program about using AI in genealogy being added to the calendar about every week recently, so you might consider attending one. Here are three upcoming free programs currently on the calendar:
- Jul 09 – James Tanner – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Genealogy presented by BYU Family History Library (Free)
- Jul 11 – Introduction to Using ChatGPT and Family History Research presented by St. George FamilySearch Center (Free)
- Jul 13 (VIRTUAL) AI in Family History — Facial Organization, Photo Editing, and more presented by The Post-Ponga Community (Free)

As always, please don’t hesitate to email with your comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. They help keep the calendar accurate, and also help me know what may need improvement. You may either use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at info@conferencekeeper.org if you’d like to reach me. Have a great week!
