DEADLINE EXTENDED:

NEED MORE WEBINARS?

  • Many societies record their virtual programs and make those recordings available to their members – sometimes for a limited time, and sometimes always in their website’s Members area.  For the cost of an annual membership (often $10 to $40/yr), you may get access to decades of programs and information! Always check out a society’s member benefits and consider joining a few 🙂
  • Did you know that you can access hundreds (probably thousands) of recorded webinars from past FamilySearch classes on just about every topic imaginable? https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Classes_in_the_Learning_Center
  • And don’t forget you can still access over 1,000 on-demand classes from RootsTech 2023 at https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/home.

NEED SOME RESEARCH HELP?

  • Oftentimes societies will offer a specific amount of research assistance with membership.  I broke a huge brick wall several years back by joining the Berkshire Family History Association, who still offers two hours of free research by a volunteer in the vast and unique resources of the Local History & Genealogy Department of the Berkshire Athenaeum. The volunteer located a will identifying my known ancestor and his sister that provided my ancestor’s parentage! Society memberships really are valuable!
  • Did you know that Family Search offers free 20-minute online research strategy consultations? Details and scheduling instructions at https://www.familysearch.org/en/library/online-consultations
  • If you’re questions are about British research, you might want to take advantage of the Society of Genealogists’   free genealogy  telephone advice. This special line is available to both  members and non-members and is now open every Thursday evening from 6–9 pm (London time, which is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern time, fyi). Call (020) 7251 8799 and press option 5 (Advice line). If you’d rather correspond and share via the internet, you might consider joining the Society –  SoG members  have a dedicated online  forum in the members’ area of the website where they can seek genealogy help and advice from other SoG members.

NEED A VACATION?

Did you know there was a Travel page on ConferenceKeeper.org? There is! Two new genealogy tours for 2024 from Family Tree Travels (to Belfast and to Dublin) were added to the  Travel, Tours, and Cruises page. You’ll currently also find genealogy cruises and various types of tours, from one-day walking tours to Salt Lake City Research trips and international adventures as well.

AND SPEAKING OF VACATIONS…

I’d mentioned in a previous newsletter (a while ago), that I’d be happy on occasion to spotlight societies and what they have to offer. I received the following from the Clallam County Genealogical Society, and it sounds like it would be a beautiful spot to visit during a summertime vacation (and genealogy research)!

Have you ever been to Clallam County, Washington? It is the most north-west county in the US if one does not include Alaska. We are surrounded by mountains to the South, and the ocean to the North. We look across at Canada and on a clear day, of which there are many, we can see Victoria, BC.

This is the perfect spot for a genealogy vacation. Our new 5,000 sq. ft. building houses our computer room and library, which is probably one of the largest private genealogical libraries on the west coast. Our library includes some truly incredible books: rare biographies and a 75 volume set of the Civil War, etc. We now have close to 5,000 books, periodicals, maps, a conference room, kitchen, lending library, computer room, offices, and work rooms. (Our books are listed in “Library Thing”.)  We are close enough to visit the Seattle, Fisk, University, and Heritage Quest facilities too.

Meanwhile there are fabulous places to visit, i.e. waterfalls, lakes, Victoria via the ferry, whale watching, Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, beaches, backpacking, historical towns, and more. So while the Genealogist in the family spends time in our Research Center doing what they like best, the rest of the family can exhaust themselves site-seeing!

There is no cost to visit the library or use our computers or databases. We are a nonprofit organization, and everyone is welcome.

Find out more about the Clallam County Genealogical Society at https://clallamcogs.org/

Is your society in a vacation destination? Do you have specialty resources available? Offer unique member benefits? What are you most proud of as a society? I’d love for you to let me know!

 . . . . . .

Thanks for reading this far! And thank you as always for your support, comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. I read and reply to every message! If you don’t see a reply in a few days, check your SPAM folder (I’ve found my emails often end up there, unfortunately!)   You may either use the CONTACT form on the website or email me at  info@conferencekeeper.org if you’d like to reach me.  Have a great week!

– Tami Osmer Mize
