THIS WEEK’S NEWS:
It’s been a busy week, with just over 175 new genealogy events being added to the free online calendars at ConferenceKeeper.org. You’ll find a good mix of both in-person and online events, but I think there are still a LOT more virtual programs (when you include hybrid) in this week’s list.
Summer is clearly wrapping up, and lots of societies are getting back in gear with their fall presentations and seminars. The free Santa Rosa Junior College fall online genealogy courses are starting up this week (for those with a California address). The Spartanburg (SC) Library will be starting up their monthly free genealogy series of classes, and the Genealogy Center at the Mid-Continent Public Library has posted nearly 70 free programs on all kinds of genealogy topics. There are so many different topics in this week’s What’s New list that I am sure everyone will find at least one program that will fill a need. I hope you take a minute and peruse the list over on the website.
Every week I really enjoy reading the creative titles of programs that just make you wonder what the program may have in store. Here are just a few titles that caught my eye:
• Sep 19 Written in Stone: In Depth Study of A Gravestone, with Gena Philibert Ortega presented by Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library
• Sep 30 Sickness & Evil in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1628-1691 presented by Genealogy & Local History Library, Montgomery County Memorial Library System
• Oct 05 Color-Coded Genealogy Organizing with Laura Street Chaplin presented by Batavia Public Library
• Nov 01 Confirming Cherokee Ancestry presented by Midwest Genealogy Center at Mid-Continent Public Library
• Dec 21 Spaces of Self: Diaries and Scrapbooks of Young Alabamians presented by Alabama Department of Archives and History
There are many different topics in this week’s What’s New list! I hope you take a minute and peruse the list (below).

NEW & NOTABLE THIS WEEK:
> AmericanAncestors by NEHGS is presenting a free webinar on Aug 24, to discuss their newly launched “10 Million Names Project.” The project’s aim is “to connect the family stories of these descendants to the 10 million men, women, and children of African descent who were enslaved in the U.S. prior to emancipation and to restore their names to history.”
> Registration opens today (August 12) for the Fall 2023 sessions of GenProof Study Groups. If you’re interested in learning with a group, online, check out what they have to offer. https://genproofstudygroups.com/
> Also this week, registration opens for the Fall sessions of the Applied Genealogy Institute, and will remain open Aug 17-23. Check out their upcoming courses at https://appliedgen.institute/ and mark your calendar to register.
> Thomas MacEntee (Genealogy Bargains) let me know that he has a new online publication entitled “AI & Genealogy Guide.” The August issue is available on his website, and it’s packed with lots of information about Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms, tools, online courses, and more. https://genealogybargains.com/ai-and-genealogy-guide-august2023/
> Another genealogy podcast was added to our Podcasts page this week: “Melungeon Voices” from the Melungeon Heritage Association. Podcasts are great to listen to when you are doing something that requires at least a little of your attention (cooking, folding clothes, driving …) Take a look at all the podcasts we’ve found, and be sure to let me know if I’ve missed any of your favorites! https://conferencekeeper.org/genealogy-podcasts/
> One new YouTube channel was added this week, too: “Heritage Deep Dive,” which is from the Heritage Research Center, of the High Point Public Library in High Point, NC. This channel focuses on research in the Southeastern United States, and in particular North Carolina. You’ll find the list of genealogy YouTube channels at https://conferencekeeper.org/youtube/
> And I’ll add a reminder about the new mobile-friendly “micro-site” link to the ConferenceKeeper website calendars: pxl.to/CKmini
Thank you as always for your support, comments, suggestions, and especially corrections. It’s just me managing everything here at ConferenceKeeper, so your input and help is truly appreciated! You may reach me through either the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org Have a great week!
