This week’s email is being sponsored by Evalogue Life

Big writing projects call for an organizational structure and processes to keep the work on track. After writing a dozen books and many other building histories, this class is what I wish I had known when I first started. You will come away with files and infrastructure to set up at the start, the tech I use every day, and my templates. We will also cover digitizing and transcription tools. There are pre-recorded lessons to start right away, and a live Zoom session on Sat., Aug. 10. The replay and other materials will be available for a year. For details click HERE.

IGHR REGISTRATION CLOSES MONDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT

Registration for the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) ends Monday, July 1 at midnight Eastern time. There are still some available courses — See the website for availability and to register for a great week of genealogy education. https://ighr.gagensociety.org/ighr-courses/

MY 2 CENTS WORTH

(quick disclaimer: none of the people or businesses mentioned in the following even know that I’m mentioning them. These are absolutely not paid endorsements — Just sharing my experiences, and hoping they might help others!)

This past week I participated in my very first week-long genealogy institute, choosing the Genealogical Research Institute (GRIP)’s “Digging Deeper” course, coordinated by Paula Stuart-Warren, to help refresh my research skills which, for anything other than finding genealogy events, have gotten a bit rusty. What a great choice, too — Not only did I learn a lot, but I came away with new ideas, resources, and strategies, as well as renewed determination to solve my brick wall ancestor puzzle (I’m talkin to you, Milo Allen!) I attend webinars a lot, but devoting a full week to genealogy education, with lots of interaction between instructors and other students, is the best!

Also this month, I joined three more genealogical societies, and (I’m embarrassed to admit) finally got a local library card. I am definitely ready for the next half of 2024!

I also started using a new genealogy tool that is a game-changer! My genealogy program (Legacy Family Tree) does a great job of creating citations, but I like to include my source citation right in my Research Log as I find things, which aren’t always added to my tree program right away. I’m often torn between just making a quickie citation (maybe just the url) and wanting to do it “correctly” this first time. I’ve tried several citation templates and such, but I think the best I’ve found is Cite-Builder — It’s super simple, easily customizable, and very thorough — and I haven’t even delved into all the extra features yet. There is a basic free version so you can see how it works, but you’re going to want to subscribe (fyi: annual subscription to premium is 30 AUD = just under $20 US dollars).Connie Knox (GenealogyTV) made a short video about it this month interviewing the Cite-Builder creator that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3BhkikIv-E
