This week’s email is kindly being sponsored by Evalogue Life
If you’re excited to finish a book project for Christmas but find design daunting, an interactive workshop this Saturday will get you past that barrier. Join Rhonda Lauritzen and Rachel Trotter for an interactive Zoom session to tackle your layout using Blurb’s free BookWright software.
You’ll receive hands-on instruction with time to work and ask questions. Saturday, November 11 from 9 am to noon Mountain time. Find full details at https://learning.evalogue.life/courses/layout
🔵 LOOKING FOR GENEALOGY SPEAKERS?
This week I spent some time (ok, an entire day…) updating and improving the genealogy Speakers listing page. The submission form is updated, there’s now a place to list program specialties, and also the ability to add a headshot. This is just another genealogy community service that hopefully will prove to be a helpful resource for societies and libraries looking for speakers. It is completely free for everyone to either submit or use the list; and of course I need to include the caveat that inclusion on the list does not indicate endorsement or recommendation by ConferenceKeeper.org or NGS. You can find the page listed in the menu bar on the website under Other Events and Opportunities > Speakers
🔵 NEW WEBSITE WITH HELPFUL UPGRADES!
The Allen County Public Library has launched their new website (https://www.acpl.lib.in.us/)! This week I attended a “pop-up” webinar with a brief tour of the new features (shared on the ConferenceKeeper Facebook page since it was announced last-minute). My favorite new updates are the direct links to both the Genealogy Center and their Events calendar at the top of the home page, their new enhanced database search options, and the ability to create lists from your search results. They stated that the recorded webinar will be available on their YouTube channel, and I recommend taking the tour of the new website – it’s less than 30 minutes long.
🔵 CELEBRATING 100 EPISODES!
Genealogy Quick Start TV has added several new upcoming programs, all free, all virtual, including a very special program on November 18, which will be their 100th episode! Their schedule has been added to our calendar this week, and you can also find them on Facebook.
🔵 NEW MILITARY RESEARCH RESOURCE
Fort Ticonderoga (NY) has begun a project, the Ticonderoga Soldiers Project, to document the 45,000+ people stationed and interacting with Fort Ticonderoga between 1755-1783. From the website, “The project is designed to comb primary sources from the 18th century and provide firm documentation of service at Fort Ticonderoga for researchers, genealogists, and the general public interested in learning more about their family histories.” Learn more at https://www.fortticonderoga.org/learn-and-explore/collections/genealogy/
🔵 ANNUAL SLEEPOVER AT THE ARCHIVES
The National Archives in DC has announced the date of the 2024 Sleepover at the Archives as Feb. 3-4. The program is recommended for children 8-12 years old; chaperones must be 21+, and, well, adults must be accompanied by a child. Details here.
🔵 NGS WELCOMES NEW AI PROGRAM DIRECTOR
The National Genealogical Society (NGS) has added a new (and their first) program director for Artificial Intelligence education. Steve Little’s background and interest include applied linguistics, specializing in natural language processing and computational linguistics; language; technology; and genealogy.
Steve is the instructor for the newest NGS course: Empowering Genealogists with Artificial Intelligence. The recorded version of the AI course is available now and there will be additional live courses in 2024, including level one and level two which include prompt engineering. I’ll keep you updated when these become available!
