🔵 10 MILLION NAMES UPDATE
FamilySearch announced this week that they are partnering with American Ancestors and sharing their groundbreaking artificial intelligence and technology solutions to help identify enslaved persons from its millions of freely searchable historical records—the largest source of records for African Americans of any organization in the world. It will also help 10 Million Names identify, digitize, transcribe, and publish new, previously unavailable collections. Learn more about the 10 Million Names project at these upcoming free programs:
- Feb 24 “Introducing 10 Million Names” with Cynthia Evans, Research Director for the 10 Million Names project, presented by the San Mateo Genealogical Society.
- Feb 24 Getting Started in African American Family History Research – A 10 Million Names Event presented by American Ancestors
- Mar 1 Watch online when American Ancestors will be sharing the story of 10 Million Names and their joint effort with FamilySearch and other entities on the main stage at RootsTech.
🔵 READY FOR ROOTSTECH?
Quite honestly, attending the biggest family history conference in the world can be a little overwhelming! There’s a smartphone app and online schedules and planning tools to help you, but even navigating all of those tools can seem a challenge. I came across a very helpful blog post from FamilyTree DNA this week that details including how to download the app, create a playlist, and attend the virtual expo hall. RootsTech also has an excellent “Frequently Asked Questions” page that can, well, answer your questions. Additionally, live chat and help will be available from within the app, monitored by volunteers who can answer your questions in real time!
I’m so sad I won’t be able to attend in person this year but I’m really enjoying perusing the RootsTech virtual schedule and saving classes to my Playlist. It’s all free!
🔵 FAMILY HISTORY PROJECT PARTY
ProjectKin has some fun virtual events planned during RootsTech – a free series of short events with community members and friends sharing what inspires them for their family history projects, and what they’ve seen at RootsTech. All recordings and resources will be available through Projectkin — all for free! ProjectKin is “a community of family historians hooked on stories. Through live events, shared resources, and online conversations we invent and refine creative ways to capture and preserve our stories.” For free tickets to the RootsTech Project Party events, visit Projectkin.org/rt-party or visit Projectkin.org to learn more.
🔵 SPRING TOUR & FREE EVENTS FROM VIVID-PIX
The Vivid-Pix Spring Tour is now on the road, from the East Coast to the West! Be sure to check the Tour events page to see where you can attend near you to enjoy photo scanning & storytelling education and more! There are still some dates available at various locations, so if your society is interested in a free community-interest-generating program, use the “Click Here to Request an Event” button to contact Rick and discuss.
