A BAN ON NY VITAL RECORDS?!

Reclaim the Records sent an email this past week describing what is hidden in the text of the New York State’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget proposal, Part U of the Health and Mental Hygiene Legislation. If passed, it would “Eliminate even the basic vital records indexes, making it nearly impossible to simply confirm if a record exists in the first place; Extend embargo periods to 125 years for birth records, 100 years for marriages, and 75 years for deaths — making New York one of the most restrictive states for vital records access in the entire country; and Hike fees by more than 400%, raising the cost of a single genealogical record request to $95!” (from RtR’s email)

If passed this would pretty much end access to New York vital records for genealogists. PLEASE go to the website they’ve created just for this and locate the section on What You Can Do, whether you’re a NY resident or not. And this is all quite urgent — please act by end of day Tuesday, Feb 11!

FREE WEBINARS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Legacy Family Tree Webinars has unlocked five popular webinars on African American research that will be free to watch at any time through February 28. The titles are 1. African American Research 101 – Post-Civil War to the Present, by Ari Wilkins; 2. Court Records for People of Color Family History Research, by Nicka Smith; 3. Juneteenth–How Emancipation Came to Texas and How We Celebrate, by Sharon Batiste Gillins; 4. “We Were Supposed To Be Neals:“ Reconstructing an Enslaved Family Using DNA, by Renate Yarborough Sanders, and 5. Collecting and Compiling Plantation Records: Thomas Terrell Case Study, by Orice Jenkins. Links to all five are here.

NEW TOOLBOX CLASSES (formerly A.I. Toolbox)

Last year NGS introduced a set of classes on A.I. tools in their A.I. Toolbox series, and if I remember correctly, they all sold out (and rather quickly, too!). The 2025 workshop series has just been announced, and is now the GenTech Toolbox, as the tools include more than just A.I. tools. The courses are based on either free or subscription-based digital tools that will make your research and writing more efficient and engaging, including artificial intelligence, spreadsheets, and interactive digital storytelling. Check out the upcoming list of workshops and get registered for those that pique your interest. You may purchase a course plus recording, or just the live course only at a discount. The workshop courses are open to anyone, but NGS members receive a discount. Full details here.

APPLICATION WINDOW OPEN FOR GENFED

Gen-Fed is now accepting entries for the registration drawing the weeks of February 8th through February 21st, 2025. With only 35 seats available for this in-person institute, a random selection process is used to ‘even the playing field.’ The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records will be held in-person at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., from Sunday, August 10th through Saturday, August 16th, 2025. Read all of the details and use the form to submit your application here.

VALENTINES DAY PLANS?

More fun than a dinner out or a box of chocolates, join the Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon hosted by the Library of Congress, on February 14! Celebrating the legacy of Frederick Douglass, volunteers will transcribe selected materials including rare books and manuscripts related to African American history. Check out the blog post with details here, and then head to the LOC “By The People” virtual volunteer page on February 14 and get to work!

MORE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ADDED

RootsTech has announced three new virtual keynote speakers for the upcoming 2025 conference. The speakers just announced are Italian entertainment personality Marco Lui; Filipino singer-songwriter and YouTube sensation Ysabelle Cuevas; and Latin America’s funniest social media family Los Chicaneros. RootsTech will be live and online, March 6-8, 2025. See all the celebrity keynote speakers here.

NEW SEARCH TOOL FOR ROOTSTECH 2025

The Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society has created a helpful RootTech 2025 Database tool for their members to simplify searching the sessions for RootsTech 2025. While anyone may peruse the RootsTech website and access the session information for each day, their handy new database includes all sessions and is easily searchable, so you can quickly find courses specific to your interest, or by your favorite speakers. If you ask me, you can never belong to too many societies! Consider joining NWSGS, not only for access to this new database, but for many other member benefits including special interest groups, and an impressive archive of webinar recordings and access to handouts. Watch a video about the database here.

CALLING ALL GENEALOGY AUTHORS

I’m working on a new page for the ConferenceKeeper.org website showcasing a wide range of genealogy books. This page will feature both fiction and non-fiction works, highlighting the contributions of genealogists and authors within our community. Whether you are looking for classic genealogy texts or newer releases, this resource will help you discover books that might have flown under the radar but are invaluable for research or a relaxing read. If you have written a book related to genealogy, please email me the title, a brief description, and where readers can find your book (including a URL if possible). If you have an image of the book, that would be appreciated as well. Please send your submissions to info@conferencekeeper.org
