This Week’s Genealogy News:
FREE ACCESS TIL JULY 22
Ancestry.com is offering free access to all Immigration and Travel records until July 22 (Monday).
2025 GRIP ANNOUNCEMENT
The dates for 2025 GRIP Genealogy Institute have been announced, and will be Virtual: 22-27 June 2025, and In-person: 13-18 July 2025. Be sure to attend the Facebook Live program on August 2 at noon Eastern for the announcement of the 2025 course offerings too!
GREAT IDEA FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Two new events added this week from the Muskogee (OK) Public Library would be great ideas for societies to encourage community engagement. They’re holding a Bible Scanning workshop and also a Community potluck and recipe exchange/cookbook creation. A Bible (or other) scanning event would be a great way for NGS member societies to take advantage of the Family Matters program, too! The Family Matters Community Outreach Toolkit is a benefit for organization members of NGS, and includes the ‘loaner’ use of Vivid-Pix Memory Station™ hardware and software, education courses, training materials and marketing templates (the only cost to a society is the return shipping to NGS or to the next group receiving a loan – roughly $50-60). Find out more information here.
ALL ABOUT THAT PLACE – PACIFIC EDITION!
Projectkin will celebrate the role of “place” in family history by sponsoring a new Pacific Edition of the Society of Genealogists’ 2024 challenge program, “All About That Place,” from September 27 to October 6, 2024. The original “All About That Place” sponsored by The Society of Genealogists, Society for One-Place Studies, British Association for Local History, and other generous UK-based contributors, has become quite a popular event.
To encourage genealogists and family historians with one-place studies in the New World and the Pacific Rim, Projectkin is creating a variation of this fabulous event with 5 live programs starting at midnight in London, or 4 PM in California and early morning in Australia. These five program days will feature 1, 2, or 3 different speakers and time for discussion. To learn more and sign up to give a talk, please visit Projectkin.org/AATP24.
IMPORTANT CHANGE FROM FAMILYTREEDNA
FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage have announced a new collaboration which includes integration of family trees between the two sites. If you have a tree on FamilyTreeDNA, you may want to “easily transfer” it to MyHeritage, for free, before September 9, 2024, after which time family trees on the FamilyTreeDNA website will become read-only. You can find full details on the MyHeritage blog here.
FREE RESEARCH GUIDES AT THE UK NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The UK National Archives has 359 free research guides available to help you locate and use records in their collection (and elsewhere). The wide variety of topics include: Asylums, psychiatric hospitals and mental health; Births, marriages and deaths at sea or abroad; British and Commonwealth prisoners of the Second World War and the Korean War; Crime, prisons and punishment 1770-1935; Jewish people and communities in Britain and its former colonies; Wills and administrations before 1858; and hundreds more! Find the alphabetical list of research guides here.
