This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate.)
WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING
MyHeritage is now the first company to upgrade their DNA testing to Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for all new kits, providing genealogists with a whole lot more genetic data (3 billion base pairs) than previous methods. If I understand correctly, this will provide more accurate ethnicity estimates, enables free download of the full genome, and will really improve DNA matching for cousin-finding and relationship confirmation. Older kits will not be re-processed with the new sequencing though. Full article on Business Wire here.
SPANISH-LANGUAGE WEBINARS
Legacy Family Tree Webinars has announced a new series of live genealogy webinars that will be presented entirely in Spanish. They already have 30 Spanish-language sessions available in their on-demand library. See the full Spanish webinar schedule and register here
CARING FOR MILITARY UNIFORMS
Fold3 posted an informative article recently titled “Preserving a Legacy: Caring for Your Ancestor’s Military Uniform.” It includes advice from the National WWII Museum on how to care for, preserve, and store military uniforms. You can read it on their blog, here.
1.2 BILLION MORE
More news from MyHeritage as this week they added 1.2 BILLION (with a “B”) new records to their historical records collections for the United States, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, the U.K., Spain, and Poland. Many of these new records are newspaper-related, which means they may include more info about your ancestor than just names and dates! Full details on these new records and how to access them, on their blog post, here.
CONSTRUCTION ZONE
I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Plaza Hotel in Salt Lake City is closing November 1 of this year, with demolition following soon after, to make the land into a temporary parking lot for visitor and bus parking for Salt Lake City Temple open house (April to October 2027), following the temple’s renovation occurring in 2026, about the time the SLC airport renovations are completed. Nearby, the Delta Center sports complex has been undergoing renovations that are also expected to be completed by late 2027. I read a news article last night that renovations at the Salt Palace Convention Center — where RootsTech has been held since 2011 — are expected to begin in 2027. I’m pretty sure most of this is partly preparation for the 2034 Winter Olympics to be held in SLC. It’s not clear yet whether the Salt Palace will remain open during construction work, but I’m sure if it affects RootsTech 2027, we’ll hear about it!
EVENTS FROM THE NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
CULTURE CONVERSATION: This Wednesday, 22 October, at 8 pm Eastern will be the Culture Conversation with Michael O’Malley, the author of The Color of Family: History, Race, and the Politics of Ancestry. O’Malley will be joined by Andre Kearns, a member of the NGS Board of Directors, who is mentioned in the book. Everyone is invited to attend! Find more information and the link to register, here.
GENTECH TOOLBOX: LIVE THIS WEEK! October 21 Workshop features Toolmaster Blaine Bettinger, PhD, JD, presenting “From Chaos to Clarity: Organizing DNA Matches with Clusters.” Choose whether to watch live, recordings, or both. Details for upcoming and past programs, at https://pxl.to/NGSGenTechToolbox

Thanks for your patience with the errors in last week’s newsletter, written late at night in a hotel room after a very exhausting week. I think y’all know that it’s just me behind the curtain here at ConferenceKeeper, and despite what anyone tells you, I’m honestly not a ‘bot’ and I don’t automate any of this. My ‘normal’ days consist of emails, updating website content, reviewing submissions (to be sure they’re relevant and not gynecology or some such…), and surfing the ‘net for genealogy events and news to share. So my days get a bit long when I take time for anything else! Thank you also for all the recent emails with comments, ideas, and new genealogy events, too. I really appreciate your input, and I should have a couple of the recent suggestions for improvements implemented soon. Do you have thoughts on what could be better? Let me know! I want this website and newsletter to be as helpful and useful as possible. As always, send any questions, corrections, comments, and concerns either by the CONTACT form on the website or email at info@conferencekeeper.org. Thank you!
– Tami Osmer Mize
