IRISH ANCESTORS? UHF 2025 USA LECTURE TOUR
The Ulster Historical Foundation returns to the United States for their 2025 USA Lecture Tour, Feb 28 thru March 18. These events often fill up, so be sure to get registered after locating the nearest event to you (or one available virtually)! The Ulster Historical Foundation’s itinerary with flyers can be found here, (however I’ve found that many of the registration links on the flyers are going to error pages unfortunately.) So I made a list for you — Click the host name to for their event page: March 1 – California Genealogical Society, Oakland, CA; March 2 – Irish Heritage Club, Seattle, WA; March 4 – Heinz History Center, Pittsburgh, PA; March 6 & 7 – Irish Cultural Center & McClelland Library, Phoenix, AZ; March 8 – Georgia Genealogical Society, Atlanta, GA; March 10 – Brown County Library, Green Bay, WI; March 11 – Irish Genealogical Society International, Eagan, MN; March 13 – The Newberry Library, Chicago, IL; March 14 – Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society, Bentonville, AR; March 15 – Dallas Genealogical Society, Dallas, TX; March 17-18 – Plainfield & Fountaindale Public Libraries, Bolingbrook, IL;
NEW CALL TO ACTION
Genealogists are being asked to help persuade Congress to increase funding to the National Archives. Just one reason is to increase access to public, US records. According to FundNARA “The National Archives online catalog hosts more than 375 million digital records, but that represents only 3 percent of all textual records. Given the millions of cubic feet of records in its possession, NARA’s long-standing strained resources slow its ability to digitize faster, and meet the demand of serving the public.” FundNARA is a volunteer, non-partisan project coordinated by an ad hoc group of genealogists, historians, and records access advocates, including RecordsNotRevenue.com. The website gives specific suggestions on what you might do to have your voice heard. https://fundnara.com/
FREE REV WAR RESEARCH GUIDE
American Ancestors by New England Historic Genealogical Society is offering a FREE “Getting Started With Revolutionary War Records” Guide. The guide can “help you discover if you have any ancestors that fought in the Revolutionary War.” Get your free download here.
KINDLE USERS!
I received an email this week from Donna Cox Baker from Genohistory.com, with important information for Kindle users. Starting Feb. 26, 2025, Amazon will remove the option to download backup copies of purchased Kindle books to your computer. A few reason you might someday need your Kindle book backups include: You lose access to your Amazon account; A book you purchased is removed from the Amazon store; A new edition replaces the older version (but you want to keep the previous version too); among others. To download the backup files to your computer (which can only be done one book at a time), log into Amazon and go to Account & Lists > Content Library > Books. Click on a book, click More Actions > Download & Transfer via USB. Create a folder for just these files. (If you connect your Kindle via USB at the same time that you’re downloading these files, they will also be sure to be added to your Kindle, but the files appear to download to your computer just fine even if your device isn’t connected).
SPEAKING OF BOOKS…
The new Genealogy Books pages on the website now have nearly 60 books submitted, both non-fiction and fiction. If you’re looking to learn some specific genealogy skills, or just looking for your next relaxing genealogy mystery, you’ll definitely find them. If you (or your society) has published a book, be sure to submit it (or them) for inclusion!
