MILITARY INTENSIVE

The Texas State Genealogical Society has announced a new opportunity for genealogists to enhance their military research skills with “Beyond the Battlefield: Military Research Analysis and Methodology,” a week-long, live online course to be held August 11-14, 2025. Led by experts Michael L. Strauss, AG® and Sandra Rumble, this class will help participants unlock their patriot ancestors’ stories by exploring military records and gaining deeper historical insights.  See the full details at https://www.txsgs.org/tigr-course-5-beyond-the-battlefield-analysis-and-methodology/

JOWBR ADDS OVER A MILLION RECORDS SINCE JUNE

The JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR) is a comprehensive searchable database that catalogs Jewish cemetery and burial records from around the world, combining burial information, headstone photos when available, and cemetery details into one accessible resource. Their most recent update is now live, adding over 268,000 Hungarian cemetery records, bringing the total to more than 7 million records. The latest data required careful handling to solve issues of complex naming conventions, but you’ll find the original text preserved in the Comments field for reference. For optimal use of this excellent resource, review the search and usage information and explore the full database at JewishGen’s website. https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm

NEW NETHERLAND PROJECT

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has released the first profiles in their new initiative, New Netherland Settlers. This multiyear project will create detailed, peer-reviewed biographical sketches of all people who lived in New Netherland before 1664. (New Netherland was a 17th-century Dutch colony in North America, centered on the Hudson River and Delaware River, and included parts of present-day New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware.) Profiles include everyone from settlers and indigenous peoples to free and enslaved individuals who contributed to the New Netherland community. Thanks to generous foundational funding from the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames, the first sketches were released online in July 2025, with this ambitious project set to become an invaluable resource for genealogists, historians, and researchers for generations to come. Read more about “New Netherland Settlers” and access the settler sketches at https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/new-netherland-settlers

REVOLUTIONARY WAR ANCESTOR STORIES

Projectkin.org just announced a novel new series that brings together its diverse Anglophone genealogy community to share stories about the roles members’ ancestors played during the period leading up to and following the American Revolution nearly 250 years ago. Each month, a member’s guest post will be featured, and the author will be the focus of a livestream conversation. Learn more at Projectkin.org/stories250.

BCG CERTIFICATION APPLICATION UPDATES WEBINAR

I mentioned a couple weeks back that the Board for Certification of Genealogists had made some major updates in their newest Application Guide. A free webinar will be on August 5, via Legacy Family Tree Webinars, discussing the new requirements, focusing on the required portfolio elements, the rubrics used for evaluation, and common questions from applicants. If you’re considering working to become a CG (Certified Genealogist), you won’t want to miss this free program! https://familytreewebinars.com/webinar/applying-for-bcg-certification-a-step-by-step-review-of-the-2025-application-guide/
