The Southern California Genealogical Society presents“Live Streaming of Genetic Genealogy—The Future of the Past: Genetic Genealogy 2016,”on June 2, with registration now being open to the public.
This is a single-day streaming Internet conference that the viewer can attend via computer in his own home. It contains six pay-per-view sessions on the topic of genetic genealogy.Individual presentations can be viewed for $20 each. For the entire conference, the fee is $99–a savings of $21 over the individual price of purchasing the sessions separately. Participants who pay for all six sessions will also receive a copy of the program’s syllabus. If a subscriber is unable to watch a presentation as it is being live-streamed, it will remain available to see until July 5, 2016. Subscribers can also view the sessions they have purchased multiple times until July 5.
This is a one-of-a-kind conference, and it will not be made available in any form (DVD or on the SCGS website) after July 5.
The live viewing schedule for readers on Eastern Daylight Time is as follows:
- 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: “Family Finder, 23andme, and Ancestry DNA: An Introduction,” by Tim Janzen, MD. “This presentation will help you maximize your experience with each of the three major autosomal DNA tests available: Family Finder, 23andMe and AncestryDNA.”
- 1-2 p.m.: “Developing a DNA Testing Plan,” by Paul Alan Woodbury. “Preserve the past by testing your relatives now. Given specific research considerations determine the who, what, when, where, why and how of DNA testing. Develop a plan to make your genetic genealogy research a success.”
- 2:30-3:30 p.m.: “Verify, Correct, and Expand Your Lineage through DNA Testing,” by Emily D. Aulicino, MA. “Learn how autosomal DNA testing can help you verify your lineage, correct your oral family history, and expand your pedigree chart. Through various success stories, you can discover how others have triumphed and how you can as well.”
- 5-6 p.m.: “Why Y? Case Studies for Y-DNA Solutions,” by Katherine Hope Borges. “Real-life case studies detailing instances utilizing Y-DNA testing for solving genealogical mysteries.”
- 6:30-7:30 p.m.: “Circles or Triangles? What Shape Is Your DNA? “ by Diahan Southard.
“There is much debate in the genetic genealogy world about the value of a DNA Circle, provided by AncestryDNA, and the triangulation methods of others. Which is best?”
- 8-9 p.m.: “Genetic Genealogy: Year in Review 2016, “ by Blaine T. Bettinger, PhD, JD. “Did you miss any of the new tools, techniques, or tips introduced during the past year? We’ll examine all the newest developments in the field and help you understand how these new tools can be incorporated into your research.”
You do not have to be a member of the SCGS to register for any or all of these presentations. Registration is open to all.
