This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
PHILLY RECORDS
Ancestry.com is partnering with the City of Philadelphia to digitize nearly 20 million historical records like birth, death, and marriage certificates dating back to the late 1600s, and make them easily searchable and available online. The city retains ownership of the material. Folks with a paid Ancestry.com subscription will be able to search the new records online and the records may also be accessed for free from any of the 50+ branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia. This article does not explicity state that they may also be available at any library or FamilySearch Center offering access to Ancestry.com, but I’d like to think it may be possible! You can read the full details at https://technical.ly/civics/what-philadelphias-ancestry-deal-means-public-records/
YORKSHIRE RECORDS TOO!
Ancestry.com has also recently partnered with the University of York to make nearly 16 million Yorkshire records from 1389 to 1858 available online. This collection includes Bishops’ Transcripts and Wills from the Prerogative and Exchequer Courts of York, which document baptisms, marriages, burials, and wills, and include personal stories from folks from all walks of life. If you’re in the US, you’ll either need a World Explorer membership from Ancestry.com or a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk to access. Read more at https://www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/community/york-records-online/
LOCAL RECOGNITION
What a wonderful tribute from the City of Campbell River (on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada) who has proclaimed the week of April 12, 2026, as “40 Years of Lost Families Found Week,” honoring the Campbell River Genealogy Society for four decades of contributions to historical research and preserving community heritage. Congratulations to the society on this prestigious acknowledgment and their 40th anniversary!
NEW BCG PODCAST
The Board for Certification of Genealogists has a new podcast called BCG in Brief. Tune in to discussions about the process of earning the Certified Genealogist® credential, lessons learned along the way, and best practices in standards, methodology, and ethics in genealogy. It’s on our YouTube channels page or directly at youtube.com/@bcg-in-brief↗
BOOKS
For fans of author Nathan Dylan Goodwin, the paperback version of The Hop-Picker Murders is now available at booksellers like Amazon, The Great British Bookshop, and Barnes & Noble. The audiobook version is in the final stages and should be available soon as well. You can read the first chapter at the author’s website: https://www.nathandylangoodwin.com/the-hop-picker-murders-extract
AND MORE BOOKS
You might have noticed the new sidebar ad on ConferenceKeeper for a new book by author and genealogist Robert Cameron Weir, ChatGPT for Genealogists. It is described as “a practical, real-world guide to using generative AI responsibly and effectively in family history research” which details “how to use ChatGPT to transcribe and translate historical documents, extract key details from common genealogical sources, analyze data (including GEDCOM files), date photographs, search websites more effectively, and even write Microsoft Office macros.” You’ll even find a brilliant way to use AI with the ConferenceKeeper website on page 205 🙂
