Birthdays

  • Ernie Banks, 1931. First African-American player for the Chicago Cubs. His uniform number 14 was the first ever to be retired by the Cubs.
  • Zane Grey, 1872 (original name Pearl Grey). American dentist and prolific author of  over 80 Western novels.
  • Robert Morris, 1734. Signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. One of only two men who signed all three documents.
  • Jackie Robinson, 1919. Athlete and business executive. The first black to enter professional major league baseball when he was drafted to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
  • Franz Schubert, 1797. Austrian composer.
