This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
REPORT FROM ROOTSTECH
RootsTech was again full of new innovations and product releases, and as expected, many revolve around or are powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). You can find several programs listed on the calendar from societies and others with conference highlights and recaps (search RootsTech). Here, though, I’m going to just make a brief report about some of the things that I’m looking forward to digging deeper into when I’ve finally unpacked.
MYHERITAGE introduced several new AI-based tools including Scribe AI, which will translate, transcribe and interpret even handwritten historical documents, whether from their site or uploaded. Lisa Louise Cooke just posted a new YouTube video showing how it works. GAIA (Genealogy AI Assistant) is their new AI-driven genealogy assistant that will provide research help and suggest possibly overlooked records and resources or other ideas how to proceed based on your existing data.
Country Coding is another new MyHeritage feature that puts the flag of the country of your family and ancestors on profiles and family charts. It’s great for noticing heritage patterns and even migration paths. Still in testing phase, they showed a new Family Infographics feature that turns your ancestor’s life story into a rich timeline graphic, and we also got a sneak peek at another AI tool that will take a few photos from someone’s life and turn it into a seamless, magical video. (Can’t wait til that one’s fully available!!). Watch Daniel Horowitz’s presentation “Genealogy, Upgraded: AI and Smart Tools on MyHeritage.”
ANCESTRY showcased new tools for telling your family’s story and new AI tools for this and other uses within the platform. Some of their new AI-powered features include AI Stories which create videos with audio narration; Ideas which can suggest next steps for your research; Discover Insights for document and photo analyzing using AI. You can watch Crista Cowan’s presentation “What’s New at Ancestry” .
I have to mention here a new feature at Fold3 (owned by Ancestry): They’ve trained AI to transcribe AND summarize their Revolutionary War Pension application records, and I spent most of my 5-hour flight home from Salt Lake City using Fold3 on my phone, reading through my ancestor Burpee Prouty’s 96 page file (learning, among other things, he was 16 years old and 5′ tall when he enlisted, was married three times, plus the names of his wives, his wives’ relatives, and all his children too).
STORIED highlighted several innovations in their platform, which can all work together to create a full life narrative and easy-to-create family history books. They’ve been enhancing and adding to their newspaper collections, including tools to extract text from articles and create mini family trees and stories. I’m most excited though about continued additions to their small-town newspaper collection, which are always full of more personal details, not just birth, marriage, and death dates. Watch “Storied: Sponsor Highlights 2026″
FAMILYSEARCH as always has added more and more tools and improvements to just about everything on the website, including Tree Integrity tools to help check for errors in your tree, Guided Merge assistance for resolving duplicates, several AI-powered tools for everything from guiding your research, locating new records as well as transcribing and summarizing them, and Simple Search and other Labs features you need to try. Watch the FamilySearch Global Tech Forum 2026 at https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/familysearch-global-and-tech-forum-2026
I didn’t get to spend nearly as much time wandering the exhibit hall as I would have liked, but I did get to learn more about a couple very interesting genealogy programs/tools that I’m looking forward to trying out:
ARCHORAL has been one of our advertisers here at ConferenceKeeper for a while, but it was only at RootsTech that I really got to find out more about how it creates your own personal archive for all your family history documents, personal stories, memorabilia and photos in one organized place. https://archoral.com/
GENEALOGY GENIE AI was at RootsTech last year, but this year I sat down and talked with owner and developer Kelly Bennett in more depth. Genealogy Genie AI will analyze your research and help you find errors and inconsistencies, plan your research strategy and then search and validate the results. The real stand-out feature in my opinion is their focus on security and privacy of your data (which can be a big issue when using AI in your research). https://www.aigroup.digital/genealogygenieai
PICTURES AND STORIES was a real treat to find. While the expo hall was full of opportunities to create your family history book easily (most all using AI), the folks at Pictures and Stories create beautiful custom books, with personalized writing and editing, story coaching, video interviews, and individual design and layout. My own background is in typesetting and design, so I really appreciate the work that goes into their truly beautiful creations. https://www.picturesandstories.com/
To wrap it up – There are now more than 1,500 on demand videos in the RootsTech Library on just about every genealogy topic imaginable, and in over 40 languages. And of course, they’re all free! If you haven’t already, create your free account and make a playlist to listen to or watch whenever you have a chance! https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/library
AND IN OTHER NEWS…
IRISH RESEARCH
If you’re researching ancestors in Ireland, you might want to check out The Green Room from Your Irish Heritage. It’s a subscription site that offers Irish research guidance, assistance, and community, and they’re currently having a Saint Patrick’s Day sale, running through March 19. Check it out at https://youririshheritage.com/join-green-room-special-march-2026/
OWNER TREES
I think most folks can agree that FamilySearch is the best free resource for genealogy research. Except, perhaps, for the difficulties of sorting out the often frustrating edits of others on the collaborative Family Tree. James Tanner wrote a wonderful blog post this week about a new-ish and not very well known option within FamilySearch called “Owner Trees.” This feature allows you to create a completely separate, private tree that ONLY YOU control, preventing any unsolicited changes from other users. Read the Genealogy’s Star article for all the ins and outs and how-tos of these FamilySearch Owner Trees: https://genealogysstar.blogspot.com/2026/03/use-not-so-new-familysearch-owner-trees.html
COUSIN CONNECTING PART 4
I now have 49,932 connections in Relatives at RootsTech! Thanks to all my new cousins here that let me know we’re related! Relatives at RootsTech will only be available until April 30, 2026. https://www.familysearch.org/en/connect/
