There is an AMAZING amount wonderful news in the genealogy world this week, and I’m sure there’s much more than what I’ve found! Did you attend RootsTech in Salt Lake City this past week? I’d love to know what I missed! If you have a minute, please email me a quick note with something interesting or exciting that you discovered. Was it a great lecture? A fascinating booth in the Expo Hall? I’d really appreciate having some fun emails to read while I recuperate from hip surgery this week 🙂

🔵 A.I. NOW PROVIDES ACCESS TO UNINDEXED RECORDS!! ✨🌟❣️

FamilySearch has implemented artificial intelligence to help you search unindexed records from their online collections. I tried it out with my “brick wall” ancestor, and even though the searched records are currently quite limited, I still got TWENTY PAGES OF RESULTS that included the name I was searching (which isn’t too common). Unindexed land records can be a challenge and this has certainly simplified my life — my quick search returned so many results that name “my guy” named with his known wife, in places I’d never known they had been! You know what I’ll be doing the rest of today… 🙂

To try it out, first SIGN IN to your FamilySearch account, then go to https://www.familysearch.org/labs/, and click on the Card that says “Expand Your Search with Full Text”

🔵 DearMYRTLE RETURNS!

This week Pat Richley-Erickson, better known as DearMYRTLE, announced that she will be hosting Mondays with Myrt again, beginning on Monday, March 11. Be sure to subscribe to her DearMYRTLE Archive channel and follow her on Facebook for updates.

🔵 IGHR UPDATE

Registration: Registration opens NEXT Saturday, March 9, for the annual Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) will be July 21-26 and virtual. The institute offers 13 courses on a variety of genealogy education subjects. For full details, FAQs, and the list of available courses see https://ighr.gagensociety.org/2024-ighr/

Virtual Expo: Associated with IGHR is the annual free FamilySearch & IGHR Family History and Genealogy Expo, “an informative and fun-filled day viewing presentations, asking questions, and visiting vendor and society booths.” This year the Expo will be virtual, on Saturday, May 4, from 11 am – 6 pm Eastern. Space is limited for this free event and registration is required.

Volunteer: Would you like to help out? IGHR has several volunteer opportunities available as well. See the website for more information.

🔵 GRIP NEWS

What’s in a name? (Hint: $100): The GRIP folks are holding a contest to come up with a great name for the “Zoom room hosts” for the upcoming virtual programs. The winning entry will receive  a $100 credit good for NGS courses and/or book. Enter as many times as you’d like! Details at https://grip.ngsgenealogy.org/whats-in-a-name-hint-100/.

Course Registration: There’s still time to register for a GRIP Virtual or a GRIP In-Person course! Maybe join me in my first GRIP course – Course 2: Digging Deeper: Records, Tools, and Skills, coordinated by Paula Stuart-Warren. See the GRIP course schedule for more details. NGS members receive a registration discount. Visit the GRIP website at https://grip.ngsgenealogy.org/#1#schedule.

🔵 GENPROOF STUDY GROUPS
An 8-week group study of Thomas W. Jones’ Mastering Genealogical Proof will begin March 24. Registration closes March 9. Links to register for the group, as well as to find out more about the GenProof Study Groups can be found here.

🔵 GO FOR THE GOLD!

The Society of Genealogists has announced the new addition of a Gold level membership option. Both the Standard and Gold levels offer many great benefits for genealogy researchers, but the new Gold level adds access to their Armed Forces Advice Hour, Ask the Experts Forum, live online interactive workshops, and many downloadable publications and ebooks. Definitely a society to consider, especially if you have UK ancestors. Read more about all they offer at https://www.sog.org.uk/join.

🔵 NEWS FROM MYHERITAGE

New Member Benefit: MyHeritage has just launched OldNews.com, which can be accessed by signing in with a MyHeritage account. “OldNews.com offers a wide range of publications from local, national, and international news, with extensive coverage of the 1800s and 1900s. At launch, the website includes newspapers from across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Austria, Germany, Czechia, the Netherlands, and Australia.” My initial searches have produced results that I haven’t found on other newspaper sites!

Free Access to Advanced DNA Features with upload: If you or your family members have already taken a DNA test with another provider, you can upload the DNA data to MyHeritage, and all advanced DNA features are free forever. But hurry — the offer is only good through March 4 (Monday). MyHeritage has a great YouTube video on how to upload to their site, too.

🔵 VIVID-PIX DOES IT AGAIN!

I know they’re sponsoring this week (see ad at the top of this page for discount codes), but I am super excited about the announcement our friends at Vivid-Pix made at RootsTech this past week, that the Vivid-Pix Memory Station scanner can now also RECORD audio stories right along with your photos! This makes saving your stories and memories right as you are scanning the photos as easy as it gets. To see just how easy, watch the videoMemory Station Storyat the very top left of the page here.

🔵 ROOTSTECH EXPO HALL

Don’t forget to peruse the Virtual Expo Hall and catch some of the discounts before they expire between the end of RootsTech and the end of March. Plus you can learn about new tech and other genealogy products! https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/expohall/
