This Week’s Genealogy News

(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are
unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
NOTHING COULD BE FINER!
The National Genealogical Society (NGS) announced this week that Winston-Salem, North Carolina will be the location of the 2028 Family History Conference, on May 17–20. With deep colonial roots and historic location along the Great Wagon Road, you’ll find local archives, historical religious groups, and regional migration records. (And for cemetery enthusiasts, you won’t want to miss the Moravian burial grounds – truly a unique experience!). See the UpFront with NGS blog post for full details. https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/
FREE ACCESS THRU SUNDAY
Ancestry.uk is offering free access to over 326 million UK family history records through this Sunday, September 13. The collections include wartime resources like the 1939 Register, World War II service records, and prisoner-of-war documents, as well as nursing and postal registers. To take full advantage of viewing search results, you’ll need to create or sign in with an Ancestry.uk free account (Ancestry.com or other Ancestry sites’ sign-in details won’t work). https://www.ancestry.co.uk/c/d-day/pressure
FREE STATE-BY-STATE PHOTO FINDS
A free article from the recent issue (Summer 2026) of American Ancestors magazine, “Digitally Accessing Photographs State by State” by senior genealogist Kyle Hurst of Newbury Street Press, highlights online photograph collections for every U.S. state, and includes links (yay!). This state-by-state list is a great way to possibly locate digitized ancestral portraits, community images, or local-history photographs that can add context to your family stories. Read the free article at https://www.americanancestors.org/sites/default/files/PDF%20upload/AAM_v27n2_Summer%202026_State_Hurst_Digitally%20Accessing%20Photographs%20by%20State.pdf
RESEARCHING THE 9-TO-5
To help bring your ancestors’ daily lives to life beyond their job titles, Gena Philibert-Ortega has written a new article on the UpFront blog explaining how and where to explore digital collections that can uncover historic photos, artifacts, and context about your family’s occupations. Read the full article on UpFront with NGS at https://upfront.ngsgenealogy.org/2026/09/how-did-your-ancestor-earn-living-using.html
ARCHIVAL STORAGE GRANTS FOR NON-PROFITS
Does your non-profit organization maintain local and family history collections? Permanent.org offers grants to 501(c)3 organizations to help archive and preserve local heritage and legacies. The grants are not only for digital storage but in some cases also provide internship support to help with digitizing. Find out more at https://www.permanent.org/byte4byte/
