This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — it’s just good info)
REV WAR BURIAL INDEX
Fold3 has this week announced a new Revolutionary War Burial Index, containing over 67,000 records for veterans who died between 1775 and 1875. (To be honest, I couldn’t find two of my Rev War patriots in it and read the fine print: “Although extensive, this collection is not comprehensive, and not all Revolutionary War veterans are included.”) On the bright side, though, in addition to this new index, the site now offers full-text searching of its Revolutionary War Pension Files (and I’ve found several ancestors in this one). I really like that not only can you find the records with your ancestor mentioned, but with the click of a button you can also transcribe the handwritten document (pretty decent transcription too) AND also summarize it, including a list of names and dates included in the text. Fold3 is a subscription site, but can be accessed for free at any FamilySearch Center – find one near you at https://locations.familysearch.org/en/search
BIG CHANGES TO IAJGS CONFERENCE
The International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies announced this week that they are making some big changes to upcoming conferences: The 2026 Virtual Conference has been moved to April 4-6, 2027, and the 2027 In-Person Conference has been moved to 2028. Still planned for 2026 are two AI-focused virtual summits for IAJGS member societies (the next is scheduled for April 26) and their annual meeting later this year. The conference change notice includes detailed explanations about what you can look forward to with these change, which you can read at https://www.iajgs.org/an-important-update-on-the-future-of-conferences-and-why-were-excited-about-it/
NY RECORDS ACCESS
Great news for anyone researching New York ancestors! The New York State Library and Archives are partnering with FamilySearch to digitize thousands of historical records, making them available online for the first time. Currently, volunteers have been scanning books from the New York State Library’s collection which includes family histories, with plans to include local histories and genealogy periodicals. Once digitized, these will be added to the FamilySearch Digital Library.
This latest project follows another that already added nearly 250,000 already-microfilmed pages of even more valuable records to the New York Historical Records collections on FamilySearch, and include colonial deeds and wills, land grants to Revolutionary War veterans, and convictions of British loyalists.

HUGE NEW MEMBER BENEFIT
American Ancestors has added the MyGPC Library database to their list of member benefits. The MyGPC Library is a digital subscription service from Genealogical.com that provides online access to over 800 every-word searchable genealogy and family history books. (An annual subscription to the MyGPC Library by itself is more than a 1-year American Ancestors membership!).
FINDING NEWSPAPERS
Hat tip to the Boulder Genealogical Society, who shared on Facebook recently about Newspaper Finder – a free website that acts as a directory of digitized newspapers. Search by date range and state, and the results bring up a map with pins in all of the nearby locations they’ve identified digitized newspapers. Choosing a pin near opens a pop up that lists the name of the newspapers and where to find them, linking directly to both free and subscription newspaper sites. This is definitely worth a try! https://newspaperfinder.com/
SERVICE DOWN
Speaking of newspaper sites, Newspaper Archive is still down from an event disrupting their service earlier this month. They’ve posted that they expect to be back up by the end of March or shortly thereafter. If you pay for a subscription, be sure to check their website to see how to request a 30-day extension. (And just a reminder to NGS members: Access to Newspaper Archive is a free individual member benefit.)
