  • Alexander Mackenzie, 1822. The first Liberal prime minister of Canada.
  • Jackson Pollock, 1912. Abstract expressionist artist, born in Wyoming.
  • Henry Morton Stanley, 1841. Born John Rowlands, but took the name of a mentor after immigrating to the US as a teenager. As an overseas correspondent for the New York Herald, he was tasked with finding the missing missionary David Livingstone who had not been heard from in two years. He completed his task at Ujiji, Africa, and uttered the now famous question, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
