This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — just good info of interest to genealogists!)
THANK YOU!
First and foremost I want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who answered the request to donate to NGS on Giving Tuesday via ConferenceKeeper’s campaign. I sincerely appreciate NGS’s handling the expenses and paperwork involved in running the website, and I wouldn’t be able to continue what I do if it weren’t for the support of this dedicated organization! If you’d like to show your appreciation as well, you still can – any amount, even $1 shows your support. Click here, and include a note 🙂 : NGS Giving Tuesday Campaign 2025
And now back to this week’s news 🙂
NEW NY DATABASE
After a long fight, Reclaim The Records has won the release the New York State Death Index for 1880-2017. They’ve created a website just for this database with a really great search system that you can access, search, and download from, all completely free. You can read all about it and start searching at https://www.newyorkdeathindex.com/
VOLUNTEERS @ROOTSTECH
The folks at The Family History Guide are looking for volunteers to help out in their booth in the Expo Hall at RootsTech 2026 for 3 hour shifts. You must be over 14 yrs old and have a working knowledge of The Family History Guide. You’ll receive access to the Expo Hall at RootsTech in return. For full info, see https://www.thefhguide.com/blog/invitation-rootstech-2026-booth-workers-tfhg/
REGISTRATION OPENING
Registration for the National Genealogical Society’s 2026 Family History Conference, “America at 250,” will open this coming week. The conference will be May 27-30 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The event schedule, speakers, courses & workshops are already available to look through on the conference website. Keep an eye there, on social media, and your email for registration details! https://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/
A.I. & GENEALOGY
Everyone is invited to attend a free webinar on Navigating the AI Frontier with Steve Little and a panel of experts, hosted by the National Genealogical Society, this coming Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 8 pm Eastern, via Zoom. This is the first event in a new GenTech Insight Series that will look at how AI is reshaping genealogy practices. Steve Little is the AI Program Director for NGS and founder of AI Genealogy Insights. Sign up for this free zoom program here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/Jc69ZTCBTqm50m54sD1_dQ#/registration
HOLIDAY SALE
Mastering Genealogical Proof is on sale now through January 7 at a 30% discount! No code is needed. From the book’s page, click “Purchase Now” and the discounted price is shown there. Great gift idea for your favorite genealogist! https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/mastering-genealogical-proof/
AWARDS DEADLINE
December 15 is the deadline to nominate a person, group or organization for a wide variety of NGS awards and recognitions! ANYONE can nominate, and not all awards require the nominee to be an NGS member. Check out all the categories and acknowledge someone who’s work and dedication you appreciate: ngsgenealogy.org/awards/
AN EXCELLENT TOOL FOR GENEALOGISTS
The NGS GenTech Toolbox workshop for December will be “Airtable Essentials for Genealogists” with Toolmaster Amberly Beck, AG. I mentioned previously that I’ve used Airtable since it began, and wouldn’t use anything else now for my research logs and other data organization; I’ve signed up for this myself and highly recommend it for ALL genealogists. And the Airtable free plan is plenty powerful enough for most all needs. Like all of the GenTech Toolbox workshops, space is limited for the live event, but you may also purchase live + recording, or recording only. https://www.ngsgenealogy.org/gentechtoolbox/airtable-essentials/
NGS DELEGATE HOURS
NGS member organization delegates can attend the last open office hour of 2025 via Zoom this coming Thursday, Dec. 11, at 2:30 pm Eastern. Bring your questions and learn about new and continuing organization benefits for 2026 which includes discount and events in Fort Wayne for organizations (see paragraph below). An email was sent Friday with the details — if you missed it, please RSVP to Kate Smith.
CONFERENCE DISCOUNT FOR MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS
A benefit of organization membership is the ability to have up to three leaders, volunteers, or employees attend the Family History Conference at the discounted individual member rate per person if those individuals are not members of NGS. More information will be available on the Conference website once registration opens, and I’ll be sure to provide that link here in future newsletters as well!
