This Week’s Genealogy News:
(Mentions of businesses or societies in our News are unpaid and non-affiliate — just good info of interest to genealogists!)
Just a couple ConferenceKeeper highlights to share before moving on to other news: This is the first year I’ve actually tracked how many new events were added to the calendar, and honestly was surprised to find that just under 8,000 genealogy events — webinars, meetings, seminars, conferences and more — were shared on our calendars just this past year! That averages right around 150 new events per week, and doesn’t include recurring events that are already on the calendar (those that meet weekly or monthly on the same date/time and aren’t submitted individually, such as special interest groups or chat groups). How many did you attend? 🙂
I’m also happy to share that January 5th is CK’s 11th birthday — 2025 was our 10th full year of serving the genealogy community and supporting societies, and second full year as part of the National Genealogical Society. I am sincerely grateful for the support of NGS, as well as for all of you that have been with me for a while, and for those that just found ConferenceKeeper recently too. Thank you!
Lots of genealogy news to share this week (finally!) and nearly 300 new events to start your 2026 genealogy education plans. Enjoy 🙂
LEGACY FAMILY TREE WEBINARS
Legacy Family Tree Webinars has announced and opened registration for their 175+ webinars for 2026. This year’s programs include some “deep dives” and series on DNA, A.I., and other skills, plus 6 classes of “Essential Skills for New Genealogists” with Dave McDonald, and a new series for those interested in ICAPGen accreditation. All of the webinars have been added to our ConferenceKeeper calendar and are in a separate list of their own on the What’s New blog page of the website. Most all the webinars are free for anyone to watch live and as recordings for 7 days following, but having a paid membership gets you access to several exclusive webinars plus the whole library of thousands of past webinars and syllabi 24/7. You can easily peruse the list of upcoming webinars on their website and get registered for all those that interest you! https://familytreewebinars.com/upcoming-webinars/
GEN-FED DATES & SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records announced this week that the annual Gen-Fed institute will be held in-person at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., from Sunday, August 30th through Saturday, September 5th, 2026. They will begin accepting entries for their registration drawing in mid-February. Registration process and institute details at https://www.gen-fed.org/home/what-to-know/
Also announced this week is the application deadline for the 2026 Richard S. Lackey Scholarship. The Lackey Scholarship is awarded annually to an experienced researcher active in a paid or volunteer position which directly benefits the genealogical community. Full details and application instructions at https://www.gen-fed.org/2026-lackey-memorial-scholarship/
REGISTRATION OPEN
Registration opened this past week for the 2026 Palatines to America National Conference, to be held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 19, 2026. Early registration discount is available until April 15. The conference has activities and tours planned in addition to many presentations by genealogy experts on subjects related to German migration, military service, occupations, Revolutionary War experience, Amish and Mennonite research, and more. See full details at https://www.pennpalam.org/cpage.php?pt=19
SALE ENDING
Vivid-Pix‘s holiday discounts on software and bundles end this Sunday, January 4. While all their products are great for genealogists, I love the Memory Station software which is currently half price. You can use your existing Windows computer and scanner and record your stories with your own voice or with others; easily create videos with photos and your audio; and one of the newest features is that your audio story is transcribed into text which resides within the metadata of the photo. It’s a one-time purchase, and not a subscription. Take advantage of the free trial (it’s easy to use) and make your purchase before the price goes up! Use code FF2025 for the discount! Full details (& the free trial download) at https://www.vivid-pix.com/memorystationsoftware/
MYHERITAGE 2025 HIGHLIGHTS + NEW FEATURE
MyHeritage has posted their “2025 Year In Review” listing all of the improvements and innovations they’ve added this year. You can read it on their blog at https://blog.myheritage.com/2025/12/myheritage-2025-year-in-review/
They also just announced a new “DNA Traits” feature which will show how genetics can influence characteristics like personality, nutrition, and even cognitive abilities. For us as genealogists, this can provide an interesting background on inherited traits that can add to an ancestor’s unique story.
The introductory price of $19 (a one-time cost per kit) gets you everything currently available with the new Traits feature. To receive updates and other reports, you’ll need a subscription (one subscription covers ALL kits you manage), which MyHeritage is currently offering FREE for the first 12 months (then $99 annually after that). More about Traits here: https://blog.myheritage.com/2025/12/introducing-myheritage-dna-traits/
WHAT’S FREE ON ANCESTRY
Hat-tip to the Midwest Genealogy Center for the following: For a list of what is available for free on ancestry.com, go to https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/Free-Registered-Guest-Accounts. To see the nearly 1,400 collections available for free (some full data sets, some just indexes), go to https://www.ancestry.com/search/categories/freeindexacom/. In order to actually view or search, you will need to create a free account and sign in (free, not a trial, and no credit card required).
